Question about Garden

1 Answer

Trimmer won't start...no compression...oil ran dry once last year. Engine leaked oil for a year. I changed valve cover gasket and engine started once, and has not started again. Rope pull has no tension like there is no compression in engine.

I believe you have properly diagnosed your problem as one of no compression. It is time to replace this trimmer with a newer one or a new one. Shop around as some of the sales are on right now. J.

Is there a sensor that will make car use oil,not start, low compression turn over like it jump time

Cars only lose oil for two reasons, wear and leaks.

Wear on piston rings especially the oil scraper ring which is the bottom one on the piston.

Wear on valve stems which have oil on one end of the valve stem and the combustion chamber at the other.

Leaks from any part of the engine, usually head gasket, rocker cover gasket or sump gasket.

1 a simple compression test will tell you if the rings and valves are bad. thats where you start.. 2 it could be an oil leak under the vehicle , you will see a black spot. do this first it only takes a look whee you park it on dry clean pavement or place a clean piece of cardboard under it.

Smell cabin

A modern, well maintained vehicle's exhaust is virtually orderless once the catalytic converter has fired up. What you could smelling is oil leaking from the engine, for instance, from the valve cover that then drips down onto the hot exhaust where it vaporizes. That oil vapor is then ingesting into the passenger compartment through the fresh air intakes. Try airing out the cabin and then set the ventilation controls to recirculation mode to see if the problem persists. Also, the oil vapor will only happen when the exhaust is hot. So if you don't smell it when you first start the engine, that could be confirming this cause. Look at your engine and see if you see oil and dirt oozing from the valve cover gasket. You can try to tighten the oil cover fasterners to see if it stops the leak, but the best approach would be to replace the valve cover gasket.

Burning oil

Assuming its a briggs and stratton
kohlers have hydraulic valves

check its not overfull of oil
smell the oil does it smell like gas?
if so remove carb. clean thoroghly and drain and refill oil
check valve clearance .004 both exhaust and intake (cold engine)
valve cover gasket could be leaking on the exhaust
could have a partially blown or blown head gasket also

SMOKING COMING FROM OIL SPILLED ON THE ENGINE AND MANIFOLD WHEN YOU CHANGED VALVE COVERS.OIL PROBABLY GOT IN PLUGS HOLES FOULING OUT PLUGS. SPRAY PLUGS WITH CARB CLEANER OR BRAKE CLEANER TO CLEAN THEM.DRY THEM. REINSTALL PLUGS BACK IN THE ENGINE.CLEAN OIL OFF ENGINE AND MANIFOLD SO IT WONT SMOKE. CRANK ENGINE SHOULD BE OKAY.

Oil Leak

Take the car to a car wash and power wash the engine. Do this ONLY with a cold engine. And be prepared to have problems with it starting as water get's into the electrical components. Take some WD-40 with you to spray inside distributor caps, on spark wiring, etc. to get the engine running again.

Then check the engine weekly to see where the oil is coming from.
