I got it! The way that seems to resolving the problem is: 1.) Right click on the video 2.) Click on settings 3.) Click on the little screen at the bottom with the paintbrush 4.) Turn off the hardware accelerator

Sounds like you've got a pinched wire going from the screen to the motherboard, or a loose connector somewhere in there. Opening the screen all the way either puts pressure on the wire or pulls the connector out more.

If you're comfortable taking the laptop apart, you can probably isolate the problem and maybe even fix it, but otherwise you should take it to a technician or service shop.

The problem you seem to have is the thin wires that carry the picture to the LCD screen may be broken or making and breaking, you certainly wont be able to repair yourself, get it to a good camera shop for first aid.

Black lcd screen

try to connect it to an external monitor to see if video card is working.
if yes, the the internal card/lcd screen connector may have become loose or your screen is broke.
you will have to remove some parts to check this.
before doing so, get the manual(paper or download) first and look where all the little screws are. if you know someone who can repair PC's he might help out if you let him...
it is a fiddly work but seeing a technician may be cost-intensive.
PLease decide yourself...

Does Not Turn On

First thing you're gonna want to try is reseating the memory.

Second, see if you can get into the bios by pressing F2, F10, DEL key it depends see if you see something on the screen, sometimes pressing ESC does it. It all depends.

Try that first and let me know what happens.

IBM R40 Screen Problems

I think you have an inverter board thats just about dead. It's located in the screens plastic housing at the bottom of the screen just above the keyboard. It's about 4 inches long and a half inch wide. There's just one little cable connecting it. But you have to take your screen apart to get to it. It's easy to replace and relatively inexpensive but it does require a little disassembly skill.
Also ,I will need the exact part number from the bottom of your laptop. There are several different R 40 models, and 2 different screen sizes.

If I open my Satellite A105 display too far, it goes black.

Hi, This is definitely a loose connection problem.
Does the screen go completely black or just a part ?
If its just a part, LCD is defective. You may have to change the whole LCD screen. You can get one for ~180$ from ebay
If the whole is turning off, I guess the power cable might be little loose.
You can open the LCD panel and check if you know what you are doing.
Else take it to a normal technician and ask him to open the LCD panel and see it.
