Question about Whirlpool Dishwashers

1 Answer

The note by FixAllPhil entitled "Poor cleaning or noisy pump on Whirlpool or Kenmore dishwasher" has a significant error. The first step should be to "Remove the lower wash arm (1) by turning the nut CLOCKWISE (right)". I damaged the threads on my dishwasher nut by trying to turn it counterclockwise. Once that error is corrected, please remove this post.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the quick response. The sump on my dishwasher was sparkling clean, but I still have a noise when the pump runs. I'm still investigating?"

  • Philip May 30, 2010

The noise is most likely coming from the motor bearings. If you look under the dishwasher use a mirror and look for signs of water leaking between the pump and motor, or on the floor under the center.

Ref: Poor cleaning or noisy pump on Whirlpool or Kenmore dishwasher. April 25,...

A plugged up sump can cause a multitude of problems in a dishwasher, it can make the dishwasher not clean as well as it should, make the cycle run longer, it can create noises and redeposit food.

To clean the sump follow the directions below.

- Remove the lower rack

- Remove the lower wash arm (1) by turning the nut (4) clockwise (right) lift the arm off, there is a bearing (3) (small thin plastic washer) under the arm, be sure not to loose it. Lift the tab on the back of the feed tube cap (2) and swing it to the right and lift up, this may need a bit of pressure to release it.
- Remove the 4 screws (3) from the accumulator (1), lift off the accumulator. Remove 1 screw(7) from the cover (8) this is located down inside of the sump (4) on the left front side. Lift up and remove the cover (8), watch for glass and clean out all the debris from the sump and especially around the the area of the chopper and screen (6) which will be exposed with the cover (8) off. If the screen is blocked with debris that usually means you need a new chopper. it may be broken or loose and not doing its job.

Once clean reassemble and enjoy a dishwasher that cleans the dishes again.

Flashing or blinking green clean light 7 times?

This dishwasher looks for a temperature rise of the water during a heating cycle if it fails to see this rise for multiple cycles it may shut down and blink the clean light 7 times.

The failure can be wide ranging here are a few things to check before resetting the control.

-The unit not being level so both door switches do not make contact

- The sump plugged up so water is not pumping across the heater (see sump clean out below)

- Not enough water filling the dishwasher

- The heat element is not working

To reset the control use this key dance within 5 seconds press:

This will cause you to enter the diagnosis cycle once this is finished or you hit cancel the control should be unlocked and ready to use.

I have a Whirlpool dishwasher ADP951 that is not draining the water. I think the draining pump is broken. How much would it be to get a new pump and and get it fix?

If you use powder detergents or other "hard" detergent based products. They probably have backed up and clogged your dishwasher's drainage system.

**WARNING** Unplug any appliance before attempting to repair.

Step 1. Remove back panel from washer. (Use 1/4 or 3/8" screw bit & cordless screwdriver)
Step 2. Remove hose from pump. (Use channel locks or large pliars)
Step 3. Disassemble pump and remove clog or blockage from pump and hose.

Reverse process and plug in dishwasher and select a drain cycle if available.

Note: Do not use powder detergents if possible. They WILL clog any washer appliance.

Has become very noisy during sensing cycle.

Either the motor is failing to pump water or there is too much soap in the system. Add 1/4 cup veg oil and run again.
