Open the case ... find and remove the battery ... wait 30 seconds ... replace it and try again.

It may be that the battery is dead ... check it with a volt meter - replace if weak or dead and try again.

My IBM cant read the HDD during boot, but it displays it in the post boot screen, tried installing fresh XP but keeps on hanging on examining hard disk

Is this really an IBM? Didn't know there were any around any more. Is it old? Most old motherboards can't use newer hard drives. And some expect proprietary hard drives. Or is it just a "PC"?

First question is, what happened before that? Did it EVER read it?
Did someone change the Bios configuration?

Hard drives are pretty cheap. If XP can't read it, it probably has failed.
Replace the hard drive.

How to install change first boot divice on ibm thinkcentre computer

You must enter the "BIOS" at start up (sometimes called SetUp). Press F2 or F8 or F11 or other function key that will be required by your computer. Should tell you at boot.

Enter the BIOS settings, find the boot sequence and edit it. remember to save your changes.

BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU SELECT!

Thanks for your visit today.

I can't fomat my computer as i don't know how to set first boot device as my DVD drive

During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd,press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

but if you format your hard drive you will lose the current operating system and you will have to install another operating sytem unless you partition your hard drive and intall another operating system to that partition

hope this helps

Won't start up

Hi there.
If the beep is a short beep then there is nothing wrong with the PC, just enter the bios utility, set the date and time, save the changes and exit the bios.
The computer will restart and should boot straight through to windows.
Please post back if you need anymore help or advice.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

BIOS hangs at HP logo, can't access bios or boot settings

sounds like you lost your BIOS, you may need to find a way to get the BIOS on a bootable disc, then re flash you BIOS. the only problem is you need to know the maker of your BIOS, i have an IBM and Phoenix Technologies made my BIOS, i just downloaded a new version from the IBM website and reflashed mine, but if you get the wrong version you can destroy your motherboard.

to boot from your cd rom, you will have to change your settings in bois to boot from cdrom. You can enter your bios setting when you switch on your pc, You will have a screen displaying your bios posting or you pc manufacturer logo, on this screen there will be a message like " press del to enter setup' or 'press F2 to enter bios setting' look for this message and press the required key. WARNING messing up your bios settings could cause big problems. Once you are in the BIOS setup look for options like booting sequence or boot. You will have messages on the screen on how to navigate thro the setup and change values for different settings. go thro this carefully, Once you are on the booting screen select the option "First Booting Device" as cdrom them dont forget to save the setting before exiting the setup.
