I had the exact problem described and it was the following:
one of the ink cartidges had popped out of place "inside" the printer housing on the right hand side, and was catching as the printer tried to start up.
By using a thin object such as a ruler, I could press the ink cartridge back into place to allow the ink cartidges to come out from the printer side area. Once out I properly reseated the ink and all seems fine.

Hello and Welcome Error 5100 means that the cartridge can not be detected by the printer. Actually the printer is not actually loading the cartridge and showing you the error 5100. To solve these follow the following steps. I hope it works
Turn off printer
Remove both the cartridges from the printer
Use a clothe moistened with alcohol to clean the surface contact on the cartridges where the terminals inside the printers touches
Return the cartridges
Turn on the printer.
Error will be removed

Yes, 5100 means the carriage is not moving back and forth properly or there is grease on the encoder strip behind the carriage assembly. Grease spots make it lose count and slam into the side and grind gears. You need to clean the strip with a Q-tip moist with alcohol, but very carefully, not too much pressure on the strip.
my friend who is a computor t echnician came to see if he could fix it and he did. he had to go into my pixma ip6600d photo printer from the back of it and tilt it , he then discovered one of the inks were not fully in and thats why it wouldn,t move, he then pushed down on top of the 6inks with a pencil and the inks were all even and they started moving freely again. I hope this works for others as it is a great photo printer.
