Question about Toro Electric Ultra Blower/Vac 12 Amp

2 Answers

My 12 amp Toro leaf blower is 12 years old and worked fine until I tried to use it a week ago. When I started it I could see blue sparks inside the motor housing and then the motor quickly began to smoke; the smoke smelled like burning metal. A friend and I took it apart and my friend says the blower is sparking and then smoking because the brushes have worn down and are making poor contact. I tried blower again yesterday and sparks & smoking started almost immediately. Do you think the problem is just the brushes or something else? Given your diagnosis, do you think the blower can be repaired at a reasonable cost or is it best to give up on it and get a new one? ANY advice will be greatly appreciated! John M.

I am primarily interested in knowing whether the symptoms I described about my leaf blower could be caused by something other than the brushes, and given your answer whether you think I would be better edvised to purchase a new blower rahter than attempt to fix this 12 year old model - I have never had a moments trouble with this blower until it starting sparking when I first started it after it sat all winter.

    Thanks

If the brushes have worn down to the extent you are describing I would think that the motor wouldn't be in great condition either and given that the price of these blowers is only $75 I would be tempted to buy a new one.

I don't think Toro actually sell spares for this blower as it is considered a throwaway unit.

Hi, i think your friend must be a tech to have discovered the real cause of the spark which lead to the smoke. Actually the worn out brushes can be replaced but i don't know the price to get it for and i believe it will be reasonable than getting a new one which will definitely cost you more. Just take it to a tech to fix properly..

Take care

Hi, as i have said earlier, the spark was caused by the worn out brush and if you said the blower is 12 years old, i would advise you to get a new one instead of replacing it...

Toro model 51575. Was using it as a vacuum and it just shut off. Checked breakers ...all ok. Plugged it in direct to outlet and still nothing. What might be the problem?

Plugged it in and it won't run but it was running fine when I put it away two weeks ago.

Check the plug for loose wire or at blower where wire it enters to make sure the wire was not pulled and disconnected inside. If after looking and it is not a wire, check the brushes on the motor. They could be worn out or not making a good contact. Blow out brush housing and re-install brush sometimes this works. That's about all I can think of unless there is a safety switch then check that. Good luck.

After a couple of hours of use last week, the motor started slowing down. Turned it off and it would not restart. tried again after an hour and it started but sounded really rough. stopped it and took it...

sounds like the motor is worn out. Toro does not sell the motor separate. It is considered a throw away unit.
You will have to purchase a new one.
Sorry.
Good Day.
