My b&s engine quits after running 35 or 40 minutes. if I turn the ignition all the way off, it will start again and run normally for a few minutes before quitting again. what causes this? I have replaced spark plug, fuel filter, and cleaned the air filter. What is causing this?

You could try replacing the ignition coil. If it's failed, then it may run ok for a few seconds, but as it heats up it fails. Trying to start again immediately will be too soon for the coil to have cooled down. Leave it a few minutes to cool down and it will run again, but only for a few seconds again.

first most GM OEM systems will need to recognize the key first and foremost ,to do that you will need to roll window down on driver door,turn the key to the run position and with engine NOT running leave the key on for 10 minutes exactly ..then turn ignition off then try to start engine. if original system is working engine should start normally
Id start at replace spark plugs.. too this bike may have sensors that tell an ECM info one of these may be out of spec after a set time or temp .. id get a manual & check the locations of them. In manual the often have a trouble shooting guide..
check the fuel filter it sounds like it's pluged and causing too much back presure this is causing an over load in the fuel pump causing it to stop working or to presure lock
