Order a filter replacement...

Your filter sounds as though it's so old that it's disintigrating and bits of it are being pulled into the evaporator coil which in turn reduces the efficiency of the coil...

My unit blows out black soot looking stuff, and it smears when touched, and my filter is clean. What is it? And how can I get it to stop?

Carol, the first thing I would suspect would be mold in the insulation within the blower compartment. Sometimes the cooling coil overflows, causing the fibreglas insulation to get wet which in turn allows mildew/mold to form in that compartment.

Severe cases will sometimes discharge nasty stuff as you describe coming out of the ducts.

Turn off the power and remove the blower compartment cover and investigate.

Blowing black smoke

far too much fuel not getting completely burned upon iginition.
That leads on to look at:
-fouled fuel injectors, (clean them - run injector cleaner)
-lack of air to the intake (filter and clear out tubing),
-spark plugs are fouled, (replace them, ensure wires seated correctly on plug)
-ignition power is low or partial, (ignition system module not sending enough electricity to plugs)
-ignition wires are bad, (check/replace)
-ECM is failing or getting bad sensor readings. (shop diagnosis)
-cat convertors have been removed and sensors are at fault
Its a long list -- do the easy stuff yourself, leave hard stuff to a shop diagnosis.

No sound at all; not even from the headphones. The cooling fan is not functioning. Tested the three fuses, they appear okay, have resistance.Power supply puts out. I suspect amplifier, but is the black...

If no sound present - I'd go along with you about the amp. If you can turn up the volume and hear hiss getting louder, than the amp is probably good and the input level portion of the circuit or earlier is the culprit. Since most of the "heavy lifting" in audio devices is done by the amp - it's a logical point of failure.

If by "black stuff" you mean the surface of the circuit board and components are covered in a black residue - yes, a failure has occurred. There should be a very distinct odor of burnt electronics present. Electrolytic capacitors bulge and can even "blow up" when they fail. Resistors usually just burn up due to excess heat and transistors overheat and can pop, too - depending on the package they are in.

Good luck.

My Fresh Air by EcoQuest blows out black like dust/substance. So much so that around the unit and on the wall is turning black. Is this working properly?

The unit is designed to drop particulates out of the air. If you have a heavily polluted area there are more allergens/dust in the air and this might create a 'dust-shower'.
The unit charges particles negatively so the particles bond with positively charged particles. Then the particles drop out of the air or stick to a nearby object. This could leave some black stuff on the wall. You can easily wipe this off, most of this is grime/dust.

Black smoke

Change your air filter and clean the blow by tube that crosses the heads and connects to the back side of the air filter. If the tube or the air filter is clogged, then the oil that the blow by removes is going back into the cylinders, causing the black smoke. Also keep in mind that a Harley will blow a little black smoke upon starting as it ages, it's normal.
