Hello,

go to Start > Programs > WD SmartWare and click on the WD SmartWare icon to relaunch the program. Once the program relaunches, it will find the WD SmartWare drive and continue the backup.

Take care.

I backed up data w/ WD Passport External Hard Drive, and when finished my computer's free hard drive space went from 115 gigs to 11. What happened, and how can I fix this?

What could have happened is that you backed up your drive onto itself. Check your external and see if it's still empty. If you named the backup, search for that name and remove it. If not, retrace your steps right until the beginning of the backup and see what location the software stores the file then remove it.
Worst case scenario you can always use the windows restore utility and go back 1 day before you ran the backup.
Good Luck

My XP will not boot when my Hitachi 1TB External USB 2.0 drive is connected. It gets as far as showing the Pentium screen and stalls.

Its probably trying to boot from your external drive.

Go into your bios and reset your boot setting to HDD0 as your first boot device, Disk drive 0 second and floppy third, unless you want to boot from an external drive. That being the case select an appropriate order.

If the bios shows your external HDD as HDD0, then you have to work out which is the drive carrying the operating system and set that to your first boot device.

To get into the bios, watch the boot screen for a key to hit to enter setup, normally its the "DEL" key.

I got a Hitachi PortableDrive,500GB. How does the Backup-software on it works? I want to make an image of my PC, before I did it with "Acronis True Image". But the Drive above has a Backup- software, which...

this is really simple NEVER TRUST BACKUP SOFTWARE for one
you will not be able to back the HDD image that only occurs when the OS is installed trusting your HDDs proprietary software for backing up your data will only save a bunch of **** you'll never need or use , when backing up data like your whole computer there are only 4 locations that need to be backed Your Documents (videos , movies , photos , music , Etc.) your program executables your internet favorites and any game profiles , everything else is on your operating system and can not be saved since those files run through the OS registry saving them wont
save the registry loaded items so saving is redundant . stick
with saving the 4 items I suggested to an external HDD . as your
data grows daily save new data to your ext. HDD , it will take
a few minutes and you will have backed your all that needs to
be saved data . if you have any questions about backing data email at
terminalconnection@gmail.comand I will be more
than happy to assist you .

Installing driver

you dont need drivers for hds in windows XP if the operative system is already installed and you are trying to connect an external HD via USB... if this is your case you dont need drivers...you probably have another problem in your OS... And if there is a driver problem and the disk is HITACHI, just go to manufacturers website and thats all... good luck

Backup hard drive to an external hard drive

"what the error actually says is, you have either run out of space, or the backup file (.bkf) is too large for this disk. note: if the disk is formatted with FAT32, the maximum possible size for the backup file is limited to 4 gigs."

That error means that the FAT32 file system only allows 4GB files or smaller to be transfered. The chance that the backup file (.bkf) is larger than 4GB suggests that this file is causing your problems. You could try manually copying around that file (selecting all files from that folder except the large one) and see if that works.

Usually you will get many errors copying a drive directly as system files will be inaccessible and whatnot. Your best bet is to limit your copying to "C:\Program Files\" and "C:\Documents and Settings\", assuming you have Windows.
