Question about HP Scanjet 5590 Flatbed Scanner

1 Answer

The roller on the automatic document feeder is not engaging. The scanner keeps thinking that I want it to scan a page on the glass. I have a multi-page document on the feeder and there is nothing on the glass.

The expert did an outstanding job in helping to work through the problem. Clearly he has a lot of experience with scanners. He was able to connect me to information on the HP website that I was not able to locate. With his help, I am able to confidently conclude that the scanner document feeder mechanism is broken. This is my first time using 'fixya' and I am very happy with the experience. Thanks for your help....

Hi,

If you are using Windows Vista, you may have some problems related to the software. Try to update the newest fixes related to its software compatible to your operating system.
This may help if there isn't a mechanical problem.

What is your operating system.

Waiting your comments.

And please setup your scanner reading this instruction : "How to activate the ADF Duplex Option" related to your device.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello Mr. Guru!

I am a new Dell Studio running win 7.

You defintely hit on part of my problem. I cannot find how to get the "HP Director" loaded. "HP Document Manager" was loaded when I downloaded the 322 meg driver for this scanner. It has been a while since I used this scanner and the HP page you directed me to reminded me that I used the 'Director' to do scans.

I did set the 'scan both sides' option in the Document Manager but it did not wake-up the ADF.

    Hi Dave,

You can download the Windows 7 drivers and software from this link. But first select your operating system Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit.

You can check your system as described below:

    Computer>System Properties

Read the explanation next to the System Type

You can see whether your system is 32-bit or 64 -bit. Then download the compatible driver and software from the link above.

After downloading and installing the software please restart your computer. Then set up as in the previous link.

    Hope this helps.

    Waiting your comments.

Ok, you already helped me identify one issue. Earlier today I downloaded the 32 bit version and I have a 64 bit system. ;) I am downloading the 64 bit version and I'll re-install and try again. Thanks.....

    Ok... more progress...

I installed the 64 bit version and rebooted. I pressed the scan document as you said and this time an updated version of the Manager came up. Yahoo! I am able to control the DPI. Yahoo! :)

Just for a simple test, I scanned a single page on the glass and it created a crystal-clear pdf document at 600 dpi. Nice! I then took that document and put it through my readiris software and it converted to a word document that looks great! So, this is great progress.

Ok back onto the ADF issue, when I get the Manager form after pressing the scan document button, under 'Source' I have just one option: 'Flatbed'. Should I see an option for the ADF? Another thing I notice is that I do not see an option to click that says 'scan both sides of document'.

Any ideas what's up with that? Dave

    Hi again,

Did you un-install the previously installed drivers before installing the new drivers? That may cause problem.

You may try to un-install all the previously installed drivers.Than reinstall Windows 7 (64-bit) software and drivers.

After installation completed, then check the installed drivers clicking the link " automatically check to see if the latest driver is installed correctly" on the download web page as shown in the picture below:

Isn't there any Setting >Scan preferences option on the menu?

From control panel... Device manager, or from the scanner icon, right click, properties... Can you find any option related to ADF?

I don't have that software installed, that's why I coul not check.

    Please keep me informed.

I am restoring back to yesterday and I'll walk through the install again. I'll email again afterwards.....

  • dave851 May 30, 2010

I think I need to stop for today. It is still scanning on the glass only. I think the unit could be broken.

Also, I got a different interface. HP did not even give this form a name.

In any case, the current interface has the following configured:

Scan Type: Document (Glass or Feeder)

Advanced settings are: 300 'ppi' , and 'Scan both sides from feeder (duplex)'

    Output type: Black and White

    Scan To: Save to file

    File type: pdf

    Save location: c:users\dave\documents\my scans

I just pressed ok and it is scanning on the glass. Since this unit is 3 years old, its probably not worth sending it in for repair. I'll sleep on it but I may buy a new scanner. Any recommendations?

Thanks for your help today, Dave

    Hi Dave,

I think it is a software and Windows 7 OS related problem.

Would you please read this "Scanning with HP Solution Center Software in Windows 7" .

    It is written that:

HP introduced HP Solution Center to replace HP Director in 2005. HP Director is not compatible with Windows 7. If you were using HP Director with your product and then upgraded to Windows 7, the information in this document can help you.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks.

My wife has a laptop running Vista. I will give that one a try again. I tried using the Vista laptop a couple of months ago and I can't remember what I ran into that made me think it was not working.

My old laptop is running XP and it used to work on that system. But, after XP started crapping out over time, I was not able to get the scanner software functional. I don't have the original disks handy to try a complete reformat. The disks are in storage and it would take a very long time to locate them. lol.

I'll try vista and see what happens.... :)

  • dave851 May 30, 2010

I tried a scan using the laptop with vista and the scan is still only executing on the glass. It seems like more support for there being something wrong with the scanner.

I think I will go over to Frys today and see if I can take a couple of scanners for a testdrive.

This is my first time using 'fixya'. Thank you for helping me on this problem. You clearly are an expert on these scanners. Do you think we are at a point where we should close this ticket?

Why are pages scanning with lines running through them, but printing perfectly fine?

Try cleaning the rollers. Usually you have to remove the cartridge to get to the rollers that moves the paper.

When I scan to printer the page comes out with short lines down 1 side

If your printer has both an automatic document feeder and a flat glass portion for scanning, try scanning from both. If you only get the lines on one of the scans then that is where your problem is. Most common issue on scanners is a liquid paper, bit of paper, glue, etc on the Automatic document feeder glass. Clean the glass and you should be fine.

How do I scane on my mx310

You will need to plug the printer andcomputer together with a USB cable in order to use the printer's scanningcapabilities. The scanning unit on theMX310 features an automatic document feeder on top of the printer, which willscan multiple pages itself. You can also choose to load documents on thescanning glass, which is covered by the scanner's lid. This is how to do it. 1. Turn on the printer by pressingthe "Power" button until it illuminates and turn on the attachedcomputer. Wait for the printer to finish its initialization process beforecontinuing. 2. Place the document face up inthe automatic document feeder if the document's papers are uniform in andfit in the feed tray. Adjust the paper-width guide to the of thedocument's papers. 3. Place the first page of thedocument face down on the scanning glass after you have lifted the scanningunit's cover, if you choose to not use the automatic document feeder. Close thecover again slowly so the document does not shift on the glass. 4. Press the "Scan"button on the printer's control panel, then press either "Black" or"Color," depending on the type of scan you would like to perform. 5. Retrieve the scanned documentfrom the automatic document feeder's output tray once the scan job is over.Otherwise, click on the "Yes" button on the computer's screen, indicating you would like to scan another page. 6. Lift the scanning unit's cover, remove the document from the scanning glass and place the next page of thedocument face down on the glass. Close the scanner's cover and click on the"OK" button on the screen to scan the next page. Repeat this processuntil all of the document's pages have been scanned.

Scanning on glass only scans 1 page, does not scan 2nd page

On the scanner glass it will scan only one page. If you want to do multiple pages. you need to use the ADF
Automatic document feeder.

Brother MFC-7820N Printer--vertical lines

You need to clean the scanner glass. Also known as the strip glass. It is a 1 inch wide strip of glass that runs from the front to the back. Your documents pass over this glass when they are scanned. Some of the wax crayon probably smeared off onto the glass and now when you scan the scanner sees these marks as stationary and thus records them as solid lines. Just look into the scanner section where your documents are fed in or depending on model, some are just to the left of the large original glass.
Good Luck and thank you for using Fixya.

Red/yellow line down left side of document when using feeder

the solution to this issue is cleaning the scanner glass below the automatic document feeder(mind you its not the scan bed that you normally use while copying) .you will get the ADF scnner glass once you lift the ADF door, you will see a 1 inch wide scanner glass.that is what you need to clean.

Lines of copies utilizing automatic feeder

look to the side of your big glass and you'll see a piece of glass about 1.5" wide. thats the galss that is used for scanning from the feeder. theres got to be something on that glass. possibly white-out or even a small speck of toner can cause that. look closely.

Vertical lines when scanning using automatic document feeder...Glass is clean

It is not in the glass. More than likely it is in the rollers of the ADF feeder. If you open the cover of the ADF feeder you can see there are 3 screws (! is found under another small cover furthest to the back of the machine. Once these three screws are removed you can left the entire ADF feeder from the unit. You will then be able to clean all the rollers. Do not use alcohol as this will dry our your rollers and cause them to eventually crack. Just use soap and water to clean the rollers. Then reinstall the ADF feeder assembly back on the machine.

White line down side of page when scanning

If this is happening only when you are scanning using the automatic document feeder, check for something blocking light above the scanner. If you open the scanner top, look along the left side of the scanner glass where the paper is scanned by the automatic document feeder. If you see anything on the glass there, clean it with a soft cloth dampened with clean water.

Try cleaning the rubber rollers onder the cover where the documents feed in, using a rag and some rubbing alcohol.
