How to get optical to work

You hear about fiber optic cables whenever people talk about the telephone system, the cable TV system or the Internet. Fiber-optic lines are strands of optically pure glass as thin as a human hair that carry digital information over long distances. They are also used in medical imaging and mechanical engineering inspection.

In this article, we will show you how these tiny strands of glass transmit light and the fascinating way that these strands are made. Fiber Optic Patch Cables

What is fiber optic connectors ?

The fiber optic connectors is the removable (active) device connected between the fiber optical cables, make the two optical fiber end face precision to dock, so that the output light energy of transmitter optical cable can be maximize coupling to the receiving fiber cable. And make sure its impact can be minimized because of its involvement in the optical link system , which is the basic requirements for fiber optic connectors. To a certain extent, fiber optic connectors also affected the reliability and the performance of fiber optical transmission systems.

Fiber optic connector according to the different transmission media can be divided into common silicon-based optical fiber single-mode and multimode connectors, as well as other issues such as plastic and as the transmission medium of optical fiber connector; connector structure can be divided into: FC,SC, ST, LC, D4, DIN, MU, the MT and so on . The ST connector is usually used to the end of wiring devices, such asfiber optic patch panels, optical transceiver; SC and MT connector typically used for network equipment side. Fiber end shape in the FC, PC (including SPC or UPC) and APC; divided by the number of the fiber core as well as single and multi-core(such as MT-RJ) points. Fiber optic connectors are widely used variety. In practical applications, we generally in accordance with the different structure of the fiber optic connector to be distinguished.

Increase internet speed

To increase internet speed
* Check to see if faster internet connections are in your area:
Fiber optic and cable internet tend to be faster than DSL and dial-Up.
*Do some basic maintenance on your PC:
a scan disk, a virus scan, a malware scan, and clear your recycle bin.Delete old files and temporary files.
* Reset Your Modem
Sometimes switching OFF and ON your modem helps you to speed the internet.
* Optimize your cache or temporary Internet files.
These files improve your Internet connection performance by not downloading the same file over and over.

After you have tried some of this, try your connection again using Scanmyspeed.com and see if it's running any faster. If you are not satisfied Call your Internet service provider (ISP) and check whether upgradation of your plan is necessary.

BT internet speed....

BT from my experience have poor speeds
my girlfreind lives in a rural area and they cant be bothered upgrading the phone lines and telephone exchanges in her area

the fact they used to make a million pound a second and still make massive profits just shows how pathetic they are

you are best switching to fiber optic with virgin media
fiber optic has none of the problems you get using ADSL2 on bt lines
Plus most companies rent BT lines so switching to another BT based provider will probably not result in increase in speeds

with BT technology the further you are from the telephone exchange, the slower you are too

Amber lights on a Cisco switch.

It sounds like you have loops in your topology. Loops will cause the LAN to crawl.

Amber, on a Cisco switch port means that a port has been blocked either as a security violation (if mac-address security is being used) or by spanning-tree protocol which shuts down ports involved in a network loop.

Check all your wiring carefully...especially the fiber-to-ethernet converters. If anybody has a hub or switch under their desk make sure they do not have two ports from that device patched into two ports in your cisco switch.

From Cisco catalyst 3500 user guide:

Solid amber

Port is not forwarding. Port was disabled by management or an address violation or blocked by Spanning-Tree Protocol (STP).

Note After a port is reconfigured, the port status LED can remain amber for up to 30 seconds as STP checks the switch for possible loops.

Slow internet.

Your hub can support more that fiber optic puts out. Problem might be a slow computer. Run a internet speed test see what it gets through hub and then straight to the computer bypassing the hub. If possible. If there is a big difference either way what ever is slower is most likley the issue.

How to make my DSL faster by higher speed?

I would start by looking at the wiring in the house (from plug in the wall to the Demarcation line) make sure that is high quality wire and good connections. Then move to the Phone Co., get them to inspect the local loop wiring for bad connections/wire. Then move to FiOS (fiber optic technology), this will produce some amazing speeds, but you have to work with the phone co. or move to a faster technology such as Frame Relay, ATM, or ISDN, a burst asynchronous comm is your best bet.
