Humming coming from the speakers

Five speakers plus Subwoofer connected to a Yamaha HTR-5730 AV Receiver connected to an LG HD TV

The humming is coming from all speakers. The receiver is actually connected to the Direct TV receiver with audio/video cables (brass connectors).

It is not a "buzz" coming from the TV set. It is a humming sound coming from the speakers even when the TV is turned off. There has always been a hum, but it seems to be worse since we got the new HD Direct TV receiver.

From all speakers?

How is the audio connected to the TV (be specific)?

Keep in mind that a TV is not generally an audio source as its programming always comes from something higher up the audio food chain than itself. Get the audio to your receiver from whatever THAT is, not the TV.

    I can't make assumptions. That's why I asked.

Next question, since it wasn't stated: is this just a TV-related audio buzz or is it always there?

Did it EVER work without the buzz? If so, what changed just before it started?

Or, you could just offer everything you know and suspect about the symptom and its arrival so we can dispense with wild guesses.

Does it buzz during speaker set-up?

So is it there when OTHER sources are selected?

Make sure all analog signal and speaker cables are routed away from power cables and magnetic fields.

When you got the new box did something change re: the cable TV wiring? Maybe there's a bad coax cable ground or shield connection.

From my own experience: is there track lighing turned on when it hums?

Disconnect ALL external devices at the receiver one at a time and see which, if any, have an effect on the hum. Then follow it.

How do I turn the subtitles off for the yamaha HTR-5730 AV receiver? When I hook the cable up directly to the TV, there are no subtitles, but when the video output goes through the receiver, subtitles

The receiver manual may list it under "CC" (closed captions) instead of subtitles. Also, don't just check your AV receiver; try checking the setup menu on your TV, and look at the TV remote. See if there's a CC setting that may be turned on, either through the TV setup (probably under the "Display" or "Video" tab) or because you've accidentally pushed the CC (or Subtitles) button on the TV remote.

To get audio from your TV through your AV receiver, please connect stereo audio cables from an available AV input on the rear of your receiver such as D-TV/LD or CBL/Sat. Then refer to your TV owner's manual for more information about audio output to an amplifier. You may have to turn off the internal TV speakers in order to get any output from the TV into the AV receiver.

Connecting a Yamaha VX7 Subwoofer on my Yamaha HTR 5730 AV Receiver

Hello srqwrk,

You can connect the VX7 to the 5730 using an RCA Y cable like the one shown in the picture below. You get your one connection for the receiver and 2 for the VX7. These are available at any electronics store. Remember that the cable should be long enough to go from the receiver to where subwoofer will be placed.
Hope this helps. Let me know.
