SOURCE: high pitched whining
From the symptoms you describe, it seems the high voltage
flyback autotransformer has failed along with the horizontal amplifier (they
are slaved to each other). The sound comes from the flyback unit.
Well, the only way to solve this is to get a technician take a look at the set, I'm afraid. Repairs could cost upto $100 or more, depending upon the number of components that need to be replaced,
It may be worth getting fixed up. If you decide to do so, call around, as shops have different rates and different expertise.
Hope that helps!
If your issue is not resolved, please do not assign a rating just yet. Please post back as to what steps you took, results, etc, and I will try to assist you further as best I can.
P.S. - You can rate a solution with one of four ratings as explained under (remember that at times a bit of to and fro dialogue may be necessary to resolve an issue).
Thank you for using FIXYA!

If it weren't for the high pitch whining noise. I would say it probably is an internal fuse inside the chasis. It is rated at 1.5 to 2.0 amps. With the whining noise it sounds like a trouble shooting bench
job. Problems occur when a electrical/electronics device is turned on and turned off. Inrush voltage,
when it is turned on, can go up to three times more than normal. This also happens at turn off. Solid state components usually fail at this time. I don't feel that this is a problem that can be fixed in the home.---BBB

That is the Digital range of channels, since it is digital you will not need a converter box for this model. Their is also an Analog range of channels which is the primary setting, You will need the factory remote to switch from Analog to Digital... Without that remote you might have a problem their isnt a way to switch within the menu settings, good luck!!!

Hello you have a shorted Horizontal output transistor, also if you replace it also have the Flyback transfromer replaced also, these parts work in conjunction with each other, and if one goes bad its best to replace them both.
