I do not think that is correct. White is neutral. Black and Red are EACH 120 volts AC. Green gets bolted to the frame. Both motors are 120 volt. 240 volts is in the heater circuit. You go messing that voltage up you gonna fry the motors.Installing New Kenmore Electric Washer Dryer. - ea3351a.jpgIf you are asking about wiring to the main panel you need to back away from that and get a pro. I need to change my 3 prong to a 4 prong

Unplug the dryer then remove the terminal block cover and disconnect the 3-prong cord from the dryer. Note that the cord has red , black, and white wires but sometimes the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray and can switch places. There's also a ground strap wire also connected to the center terminal together with the white (neutral) wire.

Get yourself a 4-prong cord and note that it has red, black, white, and green/yellow wires but sometimes, like the 3-pronged one, the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray and can also switch places. All you have to do now is connect the 3 wires in the same manner they are connected as 3-prong cord to the terminal block. The ground strap wire now just need to be connected to the remaining 4th wire, the green/yellow wire instead of the center terminal together with the white (neutral) wire. Reinstall the terminal block cover and it's done.

It can be observed that converting a 3-prong cord to 4-prong cord is merely splitting the neutral line and the ground thereby increasing the number of prongs from 3 to 4 whereas, on the other hand, converting a 4-prong cord to 3-prong cord is merely joining the neutral line (white) and the ground (green/yellow) thereby reducing the number of prongs from 4 to 3.. If you are installing a new power cord on a whirlpool dryer and you have a power cord with one green wire one black wire one white wire and one red wire where do you connect the wires when the terminals on...

Good day,
The green is screwed to any convenient place on the cabinet. It's a safety ground wire.
The white goes in the middle of the block. The red and black go on either end. Doesn't matter which.

I have a 3 wire dryer and need to convertto a 4

The following link explains how to correctly install a 220VAC appliance cord:

Match the corresponding colors at the terminal block, making sure the Neutral (White) and Ground (Green or Bare Copper) wires are NOT terminated together.

If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Dryer did not come with electrical cord so I bought one.

The following link explains how to correctly install a power cord on your dryer:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3575913-installing_a_220_vac_appliance_cord

The main difference between the 3-wire and 4-wire configuraiton is how the Neutral (WHITE) wire and Ground (GREEN or BARE COPPER) wire are terminated on the terminal block in the back of the dryer:

- In a 3-wire configuration, these two wires are connected together via a ground strap at the terminal block.

Terminate the wires at the terminal block by matching the corresponding colors:

RED to RED (HOT) 120VAC
BLACK to BLACK (HOT) 120VAC
WHITE to WHITE (Neutral) 0VAC - Neutral should also have a ground strap attached that grounds it to the equipment cabinet or ground lug.

NOTE: Newer homes built after the year 2000 REQUIRE a 4-wire configuration to be in complaince with the National Electric Code. In addition, some newer appliances may not work correctly without a 4-wire power cord.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you

Changing 3 prong to 4 prong

My guess is that you are installing a dryer in a mobile home. National Electrical code requires them to have a 4 prong receptical. Red and Black provides your 220 VAC, the White wire carrys the Neutral side for 110VAC functions. And the Green provides the appliance ground.

I HAD GAS DRYER AND I JUST CHANGED OVER TO ELEC AND I WAS TOLD TO USE THE NEW 4 PRONG SO I WIRED IT IN AND I DIDN`T HAVE A ONE PIECE BREAKER SO I USED TWO 15 AMP TOGETHER AND I HAVE NO HEAT IN THE DRYER....

You need a 30amp double pole breaker and be certain that the fuse box is a grounded box, so that your white neutral wire is separated from the green ground wire.
On the dryer your wiring should be as follows:
Red.....left or right terminal
Black...Left or right terminal, (or remaining end terminal)
White...Center terminal
Green: Attached to dryer frame or chassis terminal

In the fuse box:
Black to 1 breaker terminal
Red to other breaker terminal
White to neutral terminals in the box
Green to the ground terminals in the box

If you have no green or ground terminals in the box, then the green wire at the dryer should be connected to an active ground source, i.e., a copper water line or preferrably a copper ground rod.
