I had just changed a flat. Saw this little black bar fall on the ground and wondered, what is this? It looked lilke an allen wrench but in an "I" shape not "L" and slid it in the hole/ledge where it fit and put back the lock on and abracadabra.....it goes into gear.

it is called key stock. your mower has a hydrastatic transmission and if one side is missilg your mower will fail to run. the key stock locks your wheel to your drive shaft.. i bought one used and the previous owner could not figure out why it would start and run, even the deck would engage but the mower would not run. after taking the wheel's out i noticed that one side was missing key stock, i spent 80 cents and the mower ran great. hope this helps :D

SOURCE: Hard to shifet my poulan pro and wont go into reverse

Try loosening the belt tension to the transmission a little bit. Some of these are just stiff and you have to slip the clutch a little to rock them into gear.

SOURCE: Riding mower surges in forward and not reverse. It

Ok first of all is not an automatic. Its a pedal operated transmission. The motion is accomplished by tightening a belt with a moveable idler and it is only shifted with a lever to forward and reverse. The belt probabley has a burnt spot in it and it hits that spot and it feels like a surge. Replace the motion belt

SOURCE: MTD riding mower does not move forward or reverse.

this is a belt driven transmission. from the engine driven pulley going aft towards the xmission differential there is another smaller variable speed pulley, there is a long belt between these two, from the variable speed pulley there is a larger xmission pulley that sits kitty-corner to it with a belt between these two. This larger "xmission pulley" is what drives the differential and depending upon which gear you have selected, makes it go forward or reverse. Check that both belts between pulleys are on, check that pulley's hardware is completely secured (nuts tightened down) The heads of these pulley's are splined to align to the shaft(s) and if they aren't tight, they will just spin and not engage the transmission. If your battery is under the seat, remove it and you should be able to see and access the aft pulleys. If both belts are on and engaging the pulley's and the shaft is turning on the transmission pulley than you have transmission differential failure. Bet it's the belt off or pulley head loose. Good luck, hope this helps

Poulan pro snowblower...engages in forward but not reverse

Fortunately I live in the south and have never had to work on a snow blower! Is the drive portion belt driven? If so, take a close look at them to make sure that they are not worn or streched. If it is hydraulic driven you will have a problem with the valve that diverts the fluid from forward to reverse. Let me know if I can help further.
