If you keep on pulling on the cord...even if it is only the 6 inches you say, tell me can you keep on pulling that same 6 inches over and over again? Like in quick short pulls, but fast as you can/(Little quick pull repeats) Can you tell if the crankshaft is turning when you pull? (Can you hear the piston suction/expulsion? Is the trimmer head rotating at all in sync with any of the pulls?

Check the clutch to make sure it is disengaged. If that is not the problem, pull out the spark plug and try to pull. If it won't pull, leave the plug out, spray a lubricant into the spark plug hole, LEAVE SPARK PLUG OUT!!! and manually turn the blade. See if maybe it has just a little corrosion. If it turns, reinstall the plug and try to start it. If it doesn't turn, there may be a lot of corrosion inside and you will have to take the engine apart to clean. Good luck...Lee

How can I replace starter pull cord?

Hi James:
Replacing any starter cord is usually a matter of removing the pull start assembly, pulling the cord until it is completely unwound, block the reel so it cannot retract, remove the old cord, (remember EXACTLY how it was connected), install a new cord, unblock the reel so it can retract, re-install the assembly.
It may be necessary to remove covers or engine shrouds to get to the pull start assembly. That's part of the fun of "do-it-yourself".
Cheers..

We have a toro model 20031. The battery doesn't work and my husband disconnected all battery connections. Should the engine still start with the pull cord?

leave all the battery connections connected, then prime the carb, and pull to start, i have a quad with an electric start and a pull start, it will not start with the pull cord if the battery is not connected.

Pull cord only pulls out 4 inches at a time, but will eventually pull all the way - how to get it to pull out all at once?

TRY OPENING COVER,REWIND BY HAND,WITH THE COVER OFF SLOWLY PULL CORD OUT,WATCH AND SEE IF THE PULL CORD GETS HUNG UP.THAT MIGHT BE THE PROBLEM,
IF THE CORD COMES OUT WITH NO PROBLEM,THEN THE CORD IS NOT CLEARING THE CORD COVER,JUST LINE IT UP ANS TIGHTEN SCREWS,GOOD LUCK,

The pull cord will not pull to start the trimmer

i had a problem like this on an old mower, the cord had become tangled inside the unit, it limited the pull of the cable so it would now spin the engine enough to start. it is not too difficult to to pop the top off the unit and check for tangles or knots

Very hard to pull cord

Hi Marco:
You're not alone with that problem. My 266 will barely pull over after sitting for a few days. After a couple of pulls it loosens up and starts fine. Hot starts are also easy. It did not completely solve the problem BUT THIS SURE HELPED. I took the starter assembly off the saw. The narrow reel that the pull cord feeds into had spread which allowed the cord to wedge in against itself. I replaced the reel and here's the important part, MAKE SURE YOU USE A LARGE DIAMETER PULL CORD. That way the cord will lay on top of itself and will not wedge the reel apart.
Gotta love those old Husky's!

Generator hard to start. Kick back

This sounds like the timing is off. Remove the spark plug and pull the cord to see if there is less tension. If there is less tension then you know that the pull cord is fine. Do a compression check on the cylinder, it should be around 100psi. Remove the valve cover and check to see if valves are moving when your pulling the cord. The valves could have came off the rockers.
