Is it detected or not? if so,
Tip 1. Go to Computer Management (Right click on the My Computer - Manage - Disk Management) and right click on the drive, change the Drive Letter, click Ok and restart your Pc.
Tip 2. You can also try this, Plug in and turn on the external USB hard drive Right mouse click on My Computer Left click on Manage Left click on Device Manager Expand the USB list Find the USB device for your USB Hard Drive (in my case it was the one that had no description) Right mouse click - Uninstall Turn off the external USB hard drive Turn on the external USB hard drive and let it find and install the driver (windows will automatically if it doesn't come with the package)
Tip 3. Start -> Computer -> Organize -> Folder and search options -> click View tab -> uncheck "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder" -> OK.

If after trying all these measures, the problem still persists then let me know once again. I will post you another method. I can't write down everything here, since you haven't mentioned the exact problem, so I would like to request you to please let me know the exact problem so that i can help you better. Did you connect it after while the system is running or did you connect it to the pc before it is booted?.

I brough this drive home with me form Utah (my son's hard drive)

I have XP on my computer. The computer sees it as a removable drive and assigns a drive letter to it. When I click on the drive in my computer it tells me "to insert a disk"

Tried new USB cable, same problem.

The driver is showing up as a Microsft driver

If you can, please try it on another Pc, if the problem still persists, then there must be internal problem. Please let me know.

Trying to connect my old Smartdisk USBFLB120 to my Toshiba Laptop with Windows 7 64 bit - can't get drive to recognize as drive - Lapop sees device but says it is unavailable

Change you usb port or replace the smartdisk's usb cable, probably the current one if broken. Also restart the pc whilst the smartdisk is connected. It shd be recognised now.

It depends on how you copied your files to the SmartDisk.
If you used the "normal" method of copying files/folders in Windows, then just connect it to the new computer.
If you used some "backup" software from Verbatim to write "backup" files,
then you'll need to install that software on the new computer,
in order to retrieve from those "backup" images.

My computer recognizes that my Firelite is connected via USB however I am unable to access the files on it (i.e. new drive letter does not appear in explorer.

What you will need to do is set a drive letter to the USB drive because most likely the default drive letter it is trying to use is assigned to another drive.

The link below will help you go through the steps to do this.
