if you go to the menu on your tv it should show picture you may need to snoop around for it but its there and when you do find it adjust it untill you got a nice picture about the tv not being full on the screen try buying wide sceen movies it should help but the adjustments should help the most

the red flash you are talking about im assuming is the screen going red
that usualy means a red picture tube they break down
one way to tell turn the red screen control counter clockwise and see if you can control the tube gain
and then you can lightly tap on crt neck and i do mean carfuly and see if it flashes it most likely will and you would need to change the crt and reset it up

Sounds like blown invertor board that powers the backlights (if it is LCD or PLASMA). If your lucky and its just the invertor board blown it could cost anywhere between £50-£150 for new board (without labour).. if you are UN-Lucky, then the backlights themselfs may have blown which is *usually* an un-economic repair.
