The sensor that detects when the cover is open is "lying" to you -- it may be clogged with dust or ink, and thus is giving a "false positive" report.
Blow some compressed-air at the sensor, to see if that will unclog it.
Or, take the printer to a qualified technician, for proper trouble-shooting.
