Gateway gm5442 very slow to boot, 20 to 30 minutes.

Tried different cpu, memory, hard drive, video, power supply. no different. put hard drive in different computer, works fine. Eventually works in gateway, just very very slow to boot up and 5 minutes or so to shut down.

When you put the hard drive in the other computer, did you use it as the primary hard drive?

yes i set it as the master in an abit ic7 board with an intel 3.2 800fsb. worked great in that box. booted as normal, got on the internet, etc. did everything it was supposed to. installed it back in the gateway box and back to 30 minutes or more to boot.

You said you tried different CPU, but it was the same motherboard, right? Maybe the motherboard speed (data bus, etc.) is just slow. Otherwise, there's not much left to try if the hard drive works OK in another computer and you've tried upgrading the memory, CPU, and power supply.

Sure, sorry I couldn't be more help. I've never seen anything like that either. Maybe it's a compatibility problem somewhere internally?

Did you possibly load windows onto the hard drive when it was in a different computer, can't do that as the device drivers would be different. Very unusual performance for hardware problem, I never had luck swapping mother boards,in my experience you are in dangerous territory there and may get total shutdown for good if wrong board drivers load. Windows itself can get corrupted, that would sound more likely the problem, that being if the other computer wasn't working fine--with windows. If that be it, would need to format drive and reload windows to fix. With 3.2ghz and 800 bus you ought to be blasting off with speed.

Gateway GM5442 PC Desktop Won't Boot!

Guest Posts: n/a 01-24-2005 We had a power failure in the office this weekend. All the systems are back
up and running fine, except for the receptionists. It's a Gateway
Professional Series. P4 1.3 Ghz. It is giving me three beeps. No boot up
screen and no video source (monitor light stays yellow instead of turning
green). I looked up the beep code and it says three beeps means the ram
needs reseated. Which I have done several times. Also, I have just put in
one stick in difference seats. I have also reseated all the cards at least
three times. I have switched the jumper to try to boot into setup mode.
Nothing there either. Popped out the cmos battery and put it back in. No
good either.

Has all the ram been fried? The fan on the cpu is still spinning. The cd-rom
ejects. I can't hear the hard drive spinning. I guess I can swap the hard
drive for a different one.

Anything I'm missing? YEP

Gateway PC GT5028 cpu fan comes on and stays on, but the computer does not boot, the screen is black and there are no beeps. I have replaced the power supply and the video card, but no joy. I also...

Just try putting your memory stick 1 at time, then on the pc, check each memory likewise mentioned. If this dosn;t work, trying taking out all the hardware attched to the motherboard, including hard drive, cd-rom. Now just try with to on your motherboard with basic hardware, video card, single ram. Hope you will find the problem, isf it is of luck.

Powers on but only power to all fans cpu, case, video card nothing els and no beeps

leave only the motherboard and power supply connected. power on. listen for beeps....then put in the processor, check for beeps, memory, then video card,, then hard drive. test power supply voltage, or try with a known working power supply. if you still cant find the problem its most likely the motherboard

Gateway gm5442 takes a very long time to boot, but it finally does, after about 20 to 30 minutes. Have tried different processor, power supply, memory, and video card

there ar enothing wrong whith all of these...the memory it affects it the most ..I means tha Ram memory ...also it would not hurt to reinstall the operation system from scratch ..if it does the same than the motherboard has issues and probably it is gone ..if you changed the rest there is nothing else that can be ..
there can be a issue with the hard disk when you boot it goes in a chack disk loop ..and that takes about half an hour to do ..and if it does it every time you open it ..than you should get the hdd..and format it head to bottom ..or replace it ...But first try to format it in another pc make it quick ..than reinstall the operation system and it will work ..or ..just get another one least for the operation system to be installed on ..and keep this one to store..iin..
Please do not forget to rate me ..

No beep codes, only flashing cursor on display. Removed ram, got beep code. Tried different processor and memory, still same, no beep, no display, no boot. Cannot access bios settings. Sounds like dead...

Sounds like a bad motherboard. To be sure, I'd remove or unplug all devices (hard drive, CD-ROM, etc) and verify. Sometimes, those devices can prevent a bootup. If you've removed all those and same thing, bad board.

We've had a Gateway 816GM desktop for about 3-years and except for the usual PC problems it's been fairly reliable. However, in the last few days it started locking up, no video, then it starting hanging...

If the hard drive is still good, your files are safe. Replacing the motherboard may mean you will need to reinstall the operating system so you will have to get the files off before you do that.

Now, even though it could be the motherboard, it could be any number of things. If I read your post correctly, nothing happens at all now? You push the power button and nothing? This to me sounds like the power supply. These go out quite frequently and a failing power supply can cause it to lock up. When the power supply fails completely, then you don't get anything. These are relatively inexpensive.

If a new power supply does not solve your issue, then start by removing all internal cards, floppy drives, cd drives, hard drives from the computer. Actually, you can do this first to make sure it still doesn't do anything before replacing the power supply. Then try and turn it on only with memory, cpu, cpu fan, and the onboard video (or video card if it doesn't have an onboard video port). If it does work, then you can add each item back one by one until you find the culprit. However, in my experience as a PC tech, this is almost always the power supply. Probably something like 95 % power supply, 4 % motherboard, and 1 % other. Good luck and if you need any further assistance, let me know. Also, I would appreciate it if you could give this solution a rating of fixya. Thanks! :c)

Your CPU may have a problem

Have you removed all memory, other cards and unhooked all other drives to see if a short exists there? With a 300W PS some other component may be pulling too much that the CPU can't start so it tells you the problem is with the CPU or The CPU its refering to is on the video card? Good Luck, Tim
