Hi!

Here are a couple of things you could do.

First, turn off all devices. Your computer, printer and router. Next turn on your router first. Wait until all the lights are stable then turn on your printer. Once the printer status shows that it is ready. Then turn on your computer.

If that does not work. Download the latest driver installer for that printer and install it.

I hope this helps.

I have done this. The printer works fine with my XP machines and I can communicate with the printer throgh my network....look up properties, chane the setp, etc....so it is connected. It simply won't print and in the status box it says it is off-line.

Ok here is what you need to do. in windows 7

    1) Click start then type in brother on the top go to your brother machine name and click status monitor.
    2) if the icon is gray and the status is offline:
2-a) click start then devices and printer. right click your brother printer icon and click printer properties.
2-b) click the Port tab. (If all buttons are unclickable or grayed out you have to go first to the general tab and then click on change properties. Enter an administrator password then click yes.)
2-c) in the port tab, make sure that the protocol is set to raw. then click ok.
2-d) if that still does not work.
Print out first the network configuration list of your printer. You can access that through the printer itself. Look for the

Look for the ip address and boot method from the print out. Make sure that the boot method is set to static and not auto. Go back to the printer driver properties and click again the port tab. click on configure port. then add port. Choose the standard tcp/ip port and click the new port button. you will then get the wizard. enter the ip address on the printout.click next and finish.

    I hope this helps.

HI! my printer brother mfc-490cw is offline and wont print .what do i have to do to get it on line ? i own a mac . Louie

Go to system settings and select the 'Printer' option. Right-click on the printer and enable the 'Use Printer Online' function. Cancel all the printing jobs till that moment and redo the process. Sometimes the 'Printer Offline' message occurs due to a 'Job Stuck' issue. Check all network connections and functions. Be sure the network interfaces work properly. Turn the printer off and on to see whether the device is working properly.

Printer Offline and cannot get it back on

have you tried power off then on again, if yes, go to
START> PRINTER AND FAXES> right click your printer which is the brother mfc-490cw and uncheck USE PRINTER OFFLINE. when you right click your printer there, there shoul no check on the selection USE PRINTER OFFLINE. if that doesnt fix it still, check the usb cable or even try replacing it(the cable) or relocate to where is connected (usb port) on your pc.
a fine feedback would suffice

My brother mfc-490cw I can't send or recieve faxes.

According to the User's Manual for the Brother MFC-490CW:
  • Poor Line Connection indicates an issue with your telephone line (Page 136). If you are sharing the fax line with any splitters or computers, try connecting the MFC-490CW directly to the phone jack and send a fax. If you are still getting a Poor Line Connection error message, call the telephone company and have a repair technician check your telephone line.

  • Out of Memory error message means the machine's memory is full (Page 138).

Try pressing Stop/Exit and wait until all current operations finish and try again.

Try clearing the data in memory. To gain extra memory space. turn off Memory Receive (See Page 48).

Try printing the faxes that are in memory (See Page 49).

  • System Busy error message wasn't in the manual, but I suspect it means there's a current operation in progress and the machine needs time to finish before moving on to another job. Just wait for the current job to finish, then try again.

Brother MFC-490CW Won't Print

If you have installed something since yesterday you might want to use system restore. the program might be causing the flaw. If not dont worry. You will need to uninstall the printer from your printer page and reinstall it. depending if it is a networked printer or a usb connected. If networked all you have to do is follow the install wizard. but if it is a usb you will have to go to the company's website and download a printer driver. after that it should work. dont forget to restart your computer. sometimes that can help too.

I can not print

You could try to use static ip to remove possible problems with dns retrieving:
  • Set the machine to static ip (Menu -> Network -> WLAN -> Boot Method -> Static).
  • Check the ip number on the machine (Menu -> Network -> WLAN -> IP address)
  • On your PC, go to Control Panel -> Printers
  • Right-click printer, choose Properties
  • Choose Ports and click "Add Port"
  • Double-click on Standard TCP/IP, follow the guide and type in your IP number earlier retrieved.
  • Save settings, press OK and the problem could be solved (if it was due to dns problems).
Also, if it works, you can change the network settings for scanner driver to go to ip address too instead of dns, even if it isn't a problem right now, it could later be.
