Lay it on its side with one pipe on top and the other on the bottom so it can get air and drain faster, then when almost empty turn it completely upside down to finish draining

How to replace water heater element will water cme out when you remove element does tank have to be drained

Safest method:
Shut off electricity to heater.
Shut the water valve.
Drain heater to below the level of the element, open hot water valve in house to vent heater to speed draining.
If the element is on top, you don't have to empty the heater.
Remove old element, install new element.
Leave hot water valve open somewhere in the house.
Turn water on.
Once air is removed at hot water valve, turn electric on.
Shut water valve.

I just noticed that my hot water heater that is 6 years old is dripping very slowly from the bottom faucet, how can i stop this leak. thank you.

If you mean the drain valve, then buy garden hose cap at home center.
Cap will have rubber washer that seals tank.
If drain valve is plastic, the cap may not thread on without sanding down end of plastic drain valve.
Otherwise replace drain valve, which is simple if drain valve is brass, but can be difficult if drain valve is plastic.
Turn off power to water heater: Electric: turn off circuit breaker. Gas: turn knob to pilot.
Turn off water, open bathtub spigot on Hot side, drain water heater, remove drain valve with wrench.
If plastic drain valve breaks while being removed, then 'gently' break out broken part using hammer and big screwdriver.
Buy new drain valve at box store in water heater department.
Put teflon tape on new drain valve threads.

I need to replace the drain valve at the bottom of the tank, can I buy a replacement valve? Are they all the same size?

There are 2 sizes; 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch. Remove the old one after draining the water heater and shutting off the water supply then take your old one to a plumbing supply outfit like George Morlan's. Make sure you wrap the new threads with teflon tape at least 3 wraps while holding the spigot in your left hand so the tape won't come off as you install the spigot. Good luck!!

Turn the electric to the water heater. If the electric is on without water, the elements will burn up. Open the drain at the bottom of the heater to drain a little water from heater. You can then lift the lever on the temperature/pressure relief valve to let a little air in to release the vacuum and let the tank drain. If the relief is in the side let it drain a bit longer so the water level is below the outlet. To remove the old valve to ":unscrew" it turn counter-clockwise. (remember lefty-loosey, righty tighty) Install new valve, turning clockwise. Be sure to re-install the down pipe on the relief valve on the new valve. It should go to the floor or drain. You should drain the a few gallons of water at least once a year from your heater, and you should exercise your temperature relief valve once a year to be sure it will function. Before turning electric back on be sure to run enough water to make sure the heater is completely full. If your new valve leaks suspect your temperature control allowing the water to get too hot.

There is water constantly draining through the drain valve.

Grab a cap from the hardware store to stop it on the cheap. If it it is a brass drain valve you may be able to get away with draining the tank and replacing the small washer inside. Replacing the drain valve will be the ultimate solution.
Turn off the power on and electric or shut the gas valve to its off position.
Turn the water supply off above the tank or at the house main.
Connect a garden hose to the drain and open it all the way.
Open the safety valve on the top or side of the water heater to allow air in the tank so it will drain faster.
Unscrew the old drain valve with a pipe wrench.
Wrap plumber's teflon tape clockwise around the threads of the new drain valve and screw it into the tank by hand.
Tighten the valve with your pipe wrench until it is facing down at a 45 degree angle.
Close the safety valve.
Turn the water back on.
Open a faucet or two in the hows to let the air out of the tank while it is filling.
Turn the power or gas back on ONLY after the water heater it filled with water.

Yes, Turn the knob on the gas valve to off. Turn off the incoming water line into the water heater. If you have a valve on the outlet turn it off too. Open the drain at the bottom of the heater to drain a little water from heater. You can then lift the lever on the temperature/pressusre relief valve to let a little air in to release the vacuum and let the tank drain. If the relief is in the side let it drain a bit longer so the water level is below the outlet. Be sure to re-install the down pipe on the relief valve on the new valve. You should drain the a few gallons of water at least once a year from your heater, and you should exercise your temperature relief valve once a year to be sure it will function. My reliance 606 water heater drain valve is leaking..what size do I need to replace it

You are going to have to drain it anyway. So drain it and take the old one with you to get a new one. In case you don't know turn the breaker off before you drain it. If you don.t you will melt the heating elements. They get too hot out of water.

Dripping from drain spout

If you are refering to the "Dripping coming from the preasure tempature valve,Then just turn off the valve where the water goes into the heater and open the P/T valve with a bucket below it draining only emought water to get below the level where it reaches.     Normally the drain valves are plastic with a Male hosebib attached.  Attach a  garden hose to the rain and run it out to a point lower that the vaslve in order for gravity to drain the tank. The valve opens counter clock wise. If the valve is stuck or does not drain, and you have a foor drain handy, remove the whole valve and replace it with a boiler drain valve.  If The tank is located below the drain level then you will have to either pump or carry the drain water to the higher level.     Replace the P/T valve  and reinstall the associated associated piping. I would use tefelon tape on the P/T pipe theads.    You may have to open a hot water faucet in order for the air to replace the water in the tank ,in order to drain.
