Laptop turns off suddenly? Computers may not be smarter than people, but if they’re designed properly, they will shut themselves down before overheating to the extent that they do themselves damage.

If the smart person keeps turning the notebook back on and figures out a way to foil the protection, the laptop is probably doomed.

Once a laptop shuts down for thermal event protection, it may refuse to power back up for a fixed period of time, five or ten minutes, or it may begin to boot and shut down immediately as soon as it boots to the point that it can figure out that its too hot.

The over-temperature protection is generally a BIOS rather than an operating system function, so one sign of an overheated laptop is one that shuts itself down while you’re using it and then refuses to boot as far as the operating system unless you leave it alone for an hour or so to cool down.

Unless you’ve been working in a very unfriendly environment, high temperatures, direct sunlight, etc, you should take even a single overheating shutdown as a warning to back up your data at the first opportunity and to give the cooling system a serious cleaning.

You can replace the fan if you know how to do so but take it to a qualified technician and they will be able to sort it out for you and it should be that expensive

Acer aspire overheating fix

What model of acer apire ?
When a laptop gets hot physically hot, to the touch you know something isn\'t quite right. It\'s normal for a computer to get a bit warm as it runs, which is why computers have a built-in cooling fan in addition to a heatsink and cooling vents. Excessive heat, however, is almost always an indication that something is malfunctioning. This is no different with the Acer Aspire 5000.

What\'s Happened If you\'ve ever looked inside of a computer or seen an "exploded view" of a laptop, you will know that thousands of components work together to ensure your computer\'s best performance. The cooling fan is activated by temperature readings from the central processing unit, which heats up and cools down depending on what it is being used for. Sitting idle, the temperature of the CPU will be low and the fan won\'t come on. When the computer is performing a few tasks simultaneously, the CPU is taxed and the fan kicks in. When you hear the fan whirling excessively, the computer is overheating which can damage the CPU. Thermal compound is a sticky paste that is placed directly onto the CPU. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Thermal-Compound-Roundup-February-2012/1490 Allowing for a more direct heat transfer between the CPU and HEAT SINK and preventing air gaps from forming between the CPU and heat sink. b> Checking Temperatures You can download programs to monitor the core temperature of your CPU. Programs like Core Temp, Speed Fan or Motherboard Monitor use the hardware monitoring devices built into your Aspire notebook to track its core temperature. Different sources suggest that the Aspire 5000 can run at a different maximum temperatures. Users on Tech Support Forum say 50 to 60 degrees Celsius is normal even optimal and that above 75 degrees is a problem. Acer\'s technical manual for the Aspire talks about external temperatures for running the computer efficiently (between minus 20 and 30 degrees), but it says nothing of internal temperatures. A few different users reported overheating to the point of 90 degrees, at which point the computer freezes and shuts off. Warranty Fix Computer original equipment manufacturers like Acer sell every computer with a limited warranty. Overheating is usually covered by this warranty. If your computer is repeatedly reaching high temperatures, and you\'ve recorded the temperatures with software, contact Acer for a replacement or a repair. Out-of-Warranty Fix The simplest way to address an overheating problem is to let the computer breathe a little. Make sure that you use it on a flat, hard surface so that air can pass to the fan easily and without interruption. You can buy laptop cooling pads at most computer stores that are designed with this in mind. As a complex fix for an out-of-warranty system, you can follow a picture tutorial from MPS Computers to replace the sealant around the heatsink with a new glue called Arctic MX-2. This glue allows more heat to escape and brings the core temperatures down about 10 degrees. My acer aspire 9300 overheated and donno what to do

Overheating When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermal overload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is the problem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are clogged with dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed air to do this.

Hello, i have a Acer Aspire 5100 Laptop which i bought in 2007. Recently i have started having problems with HD-Ready videos (720p). before when i use-to play 720p videos on my laptop it use to run...

As you say the laptop handles the video well in the beginning, then when it runs for a few minutes it has trouble rendering the video in sync with the audio.
The reason for this problem is that 720p videos need the Graphics card in the laptop to work hard, this process generates heat and this heat needs to be removed from the laptop or the whole system does what's known as throttle down.

It slows down to reduce the heat it produces, thus preventing damage to the system.

The solution to this problem is to clean as much dust out of the laptop computer as possible, use a vacuum cleaner. Turn the laptop off and remove the battery. Clean the vents, it is a good idea to raise the back underside of the laptop with a pencil or the like. Some-thing that will raise the laptop off the work surface without obstructing the vents on the underside of the laptop. By raising the laptop it will allow for greater airflow through the laptop, therefore reducing the operating temperature of the laptop therefore making it more efficient and responsive.

Your laptop shuts itself down, this confirms that it is overheating. It does this so it does not damage itself.
If it still overheats then you will need to contact a computer technician to give it a good through cleaning. To clean the dust between the heatsink fins. Possibly increase the fan speed or replace the fan.

Take care!

Getting overheated and then shutdown latop immediately, sometimes it works for hr and soemtiems it turns down in 10mins. Mins is acer 4730z laptop.

Follow this steps to avoid overheating:
-Don't use your laptop in full sunlight for extended periods
-Don't leave the laptop in a closed car on a sunny day
-Don't place the laptop on or near extreme heat sources, such as radiators, hot air vents
-Turn off your laptop before putting it in your carry bag
-Turn off your laptop when not in use for a long period
-Work on an even surface as much as possible, not on your lap!
-Clean the air vents in your laptop regularly by using a can of compressed air
-Get more space under your computer by propping it up on something when it's on a desk
-Consider purchasing a laptop cooling pad
-Consider purchasing an external fan

To clean your laptop's cooling system:
-Shut down the laptop ie do not leave it suspended, sleeping or hibernating.
-Unplug all cables from the unit and remove the battery pack
-Get a can of compressed air and blow it into all vents around your computer - this should clear out any dust and hair.
-Do Not use a vacuum cleaner.

My acer aspire 5315 shuts off suddenly and won't restart till it wants to. I replaced the battery, no difference....what's wrong?

This could be a sign that your laptop is overheating. If you touch the laptop while it is running & you find it too hot, make sure that the fan is running properly & that the air ways are not blocked.
You can blow compressed air into the cooling vents of the fan. If you notice clouds of dust coming out, then it might be a good idea to disassemble the laptop, clean the fan & air ways, & reassemble it back. If the fan has failed & is no longer running, it might need to be replaced
