There are only 2 things that can cause this.

1. Bad power supply
2. Bad controller card (I take there is a hard drive inside and it plugs into a contrller that then converts to usb)

I have had issues with these types of enclosures and 9 times out of ten the chief complaint was disconnection/ or does not even see the drive and the above is relevent to that.

Hope this helps please do be considerate and leave feedback and ratings for your free anwser today..

You could try opening the enclosure and remove the drive and use it in anoter enclosure or sata-to-usb cable.

Hello,

I am assuming a few things here, so keep that in mind.
:)
I suggest that you go purchase a hard drive external enclosure for your drive type. They are relatively inexpensive, say, 20 to 60 dollars. You can get them from Amazon, NewEgg, and many other online retailers. Go with a site that you trust and has a good return policy. You could also just drive down to your local Walmart or BestBuy and pick one up too (you will pay a little more).

Most external USB drives are simply an enclosure with a "normal" SATA hard drive inside, some hard drives are 2.5", some are 3.5" in size. You should also consider the speed of your computer's USB ports (2.0 or 3.0) when purchasing your new external enclosure.

Once you purchase that, you will need to remove your hard drive from the broken enclosure. Usually, there are just a few screws holding it together. Be aware that sometimes they cover the screw holes with stickers. Remove the hard drive and install that into your new enclosure. Your data should all be intact. Try this using the same computer or the same operating system to verify your data.

I hope this helps. :)

My computer cant pick it up and it keeps ticking

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

The external storage device has several major components:
* USB cable
* external power-supply
* disk-drive inside the enclosure
* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.
Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.
Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.
Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.
Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.
Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.
Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

Try connecting it to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting it to a different computer.

If the problem persists, either:

* the USB cable is damaged,

* inside the enclosure, the disk-drive is not functioning
(although the lamp indicates that it is getting electrical power)

* inside the enclosure, the USB-to-disk-drive adapter has failed.

If the warranty is still valid, Seagate will replace it, at no cost to you.

Or, open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and temporarily connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it is working at all.

Or, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and mount it into the enclosure, to make a "new" external disk-drive.

Remove the drive from the external case and physically connect it to your computer. Start your computer and once it boots to whatever OS you are running, run chkdsk on the external drive. You will find the most common problem is that the file system is corrupt from being disconnected at an inapproriate moment. The only way to fix the issue is to connect it directly to the computer without the usb interface and then run chkdsk. Once chkdsk completes, double check your files are visible in explorer. Shut the computer down and reinstall the drive in the external case.

Hard disk not detected

Try plugging the enclosure's usb to another USB slot. If the computer still will not read it, then the enclosure itself might be defective and not the actual harddisk that is inside.

To verify this, try to mount the harddisk to another enclosure and test. If the enclosure is still under warranty, you can return it back to save repair costs.

My external hard drive no longer works, it appears to start but 30 sec later stops, it isnt recognised by windows. Any ideas?

Hi,

Lots of ideas, first things first, try it on a different computer. Sometimes software glitches get in the way, if it works on the other computer, we'll know it's the computer at fault, if it doesn't we know it's the drive. Second, if it also fails on the other computer you should swap the drive into a new external enclosure. If you're not sure/confident how to do this, take it to your local PC shop and have them do it for you, have the drive tested in the new enclosure. If it works in the new enclosure, buy the enclosure, problem solved, if it doesn't, let me know.

If the above suggestions fail, then the actual drive inside the enclosure is damaged. If this is the case you will need to enlist the help of a pro to retrieve any data on the drive. If you need a pro, let me know you location(Country, State and City) and I will give you some recommendations for your area. Once you pick a facility I will refer you into the choosen facility.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris
