I have the same Personal Media Drive and one day it just stopped being recognized by the computer. The drive access light flashed on and off rapidly. I came to find out that the actual drive inside the unit was a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 drive which has multiple reports of locking up. It is a firmware issue with the drive. You cannot unlock the drive by powering on/off the drive. It is possible to "unlock" the drive but you'll need to remove the actual hard drive from the personal media drive case and rig up some electronics to trick the drive into unlocking. There are a lot of detailed instructions on the internet, just google "seagate drive unbrick"- you'll find plenty of guidance. I performed the procedure and my data came back unharmed. Of course you want to make sure that you follow the unbricking procedure by flashing new firmware. I had used my drive 3 times to back up data and was about 15 months old - HP offered absolutely no help.

The issue here is ether the controller inside died or the ac adpator that powers the unit. There are only two main functions here, power and connection you take any of those away then you have malfucntion.
Not to worry if the hard drive is not making terrable noises then her data should be okay. You need to open that case extract the hard drive and ether purchase a new enclosure or put it inside the computer ether or. Usb drives do this even firewire has had its losses what happends over time is the controllers in these things die because there left plugged in all night and day. or simply put the adaptor that powers the unit went. Now this is not consistant with what your are saying, Simply moving this drive does not kll it. But if you did not tell windows to saftly remove the drive and it was writing during the plug being pulled then you got issues.
Thanks sure hope this helps please do leave postive feedback and ratings for your free answer today.
