This also happens when the master boot record becomes corrupt.

I tried to ghost my harddrive to another, when it rebooted to enter the dos ghost program it hung and then rebooted, hung, rebooted.
I installed recovery cd and ran repair, ran help from prompt, tried to fix MBR, when I did that I received the same error as you, since the Master Boot Record was corrupt it tried to load the OS from Network there by creating the PXE-E61 media test failure.

I agree with mewms but you also could go into settings (at boot up) and select default settings.. if all else fails... restore HDD to factory settings..... backup your files on cd's/DVD's before you do this.... Good fortune... let me and Fixya know if this helps.

Toshiba nb300 windows starter won't boot. PXE-E61 media test failure. check cable.

If your computer is working fine, then disable PXE boot in BIOS or remove from 1st boot option. This is a LAN (network) boot option. It can't find a DHCP server, that's why the media test failure is displayed. It's usually used to load an OS image from network.

For the most part not a real problem. More of a warning. Some corporate models use PXE to mass image.
If there is a problem (won't boot) then it lost communications to hard drive, and you need to check BIOS for hard drive.

The system is not finding any bootable media (Hard Drive) and is attempting to boot via the network card (PXE Boot) the error message is saying that there is not PXE network to boot from and it is exiting the process.
Generally, this is caused by a hard Drive failure. Reseat the drive and or drive connections and see if the system will find the hard drive.

If the sound you are referring to is a clicking sound, then it is a hard drive failure.
Your computer is trying to boot up the operating system from the hard drive, but when it fails to access the hard drive, it tries to boot up from other devices configured on the BIOS. Apparently, your next choice for booting the operating system is set to the LAN card. Hence, you get the message "PXE-E61 Media test failure", which means that the computer tried to boot up the operating system over the network but it found out that your network cable is not connected to your computer's network interface card.

My laptop says PXE-E61 : Media

reboot your laptop , read the screenwhen it says press ? for boot menu
press (f8) for bios

press the one that says boot menu and then when it asks you where to boot choose the one that says hard drive. when that boots up and works. you need to restart your pc and press the f8 one to go into bios, then go to the boot tab, and change it to boot 1st from your hdd. somehow it got changed and it is looking somewhere else for the boot directions and its making errors

PXE error means that it is trying to boot from an ethernet / lan connection.

check your boot order options first and set it to boot
1. Hard drive
2. CD rom drive
3. Floppy (or usb if you know how to do this)
4. network(aka PXE)

If it still fails then yes there MAY be an issue with your hard drive.

Check all hard drive connections before running off for a new one.
This can be especially true with SATA type drives most of which dont have any sort of true locking device to hold the connections secure.

Check in BIOS rom for start up sequence and check if there is an asterist (!) in front of the hdd. If there is, it’s disabled. Select the hdd and press shift key plus “1′ This removes the ! and you can then use the hdd to re-format or….
