One of two problems are with this computer. Either your Bios battery has gone bad and needs to be replaced. ( cheaper fix)
Or the motherboard has failed and needs to be replaced

My acer aspire 5742-7620 has been resetting for over 25 hoirs

This is most likely a hardware problem. If it resets by itself after you have logged in then it is probably overheating, due to faulty fans or bad power supply. If it happens right after it boots, then most likely the hard drive is dead.

Try hitting F5 key when it first boots up. Keep hitting it till it goes to a boot up screen where you can choose to log in under "Safe Mode". If you can't do this then it is the hard drive. (Sometimes it can be the RAM, but usually it won't reset itself, normally it will just not boot or you'll have no video.

It says it loading files and keeps restarting. Doesn't reach where i could log in to my laptop.

Try boot into safe mode via:
While the laptop is starting and posting the boot messages, keep pressing F8 until the boot selector comes up and then select safe mode with networking and then while you are in there, run the sfc command by following this procedure,
Click on the start menu, select run> then type cmd
In the command prompt, type "sfc /scanonce" without the inverted commas and then once the command had been accepted, restart and boot into normal mode this time, and it will run the system file checker before you log in theis time!
Hope this helped :D

Don't know BIOS password

Here's how to reset password

Resetting a Toshiba BIOS Password KeyDisk will reset the BIOS password on Toshiba laptops.
Older Toshiba laptops can be convinced to boot without their power-on BIOS password by attaching a dongle to the parallel port which crosses a number of the pins. The pin out is:
Pins 1-5-10 2-11 3-17 4-12 6-16 7-13 8-14 9-15 Some Toshiba's can be convinced to bypass the startup BIOS password if you hold down the <LEFT-SHIFT> key while booting the system.

I changed my Cmos battery & my laptop would not start after tha

Without battery, BIOS just gets reset to default and should not effect boot. There is a possibility that you failed to reconnect something important when disassembling the unit.

What exactly happens when the unit turns on?
