From page 21 of the owner's manual: Message: general alarm. Meaning: The inside of the appliance is very dirty. What to do: Clean the inside of the appliance thoroughly, as described in section 15. If the message is still displayed after cleaning, contact a service center.
Hope that all your machine needs is a thorough cleaning; it's not that difficult.

Dan, good morning, I tried what manual recommends, took machine to appliance serves and was told that control board needs to be changed. What is your experience on that. Also this machine has to have it's own surge protector in case of power default. That's what happened to mine when we have power surge going back and fourth few times- at that time I did not placed power surge protector. It turned out to bea pricy mistake.

Screen Alert: General Alarm What does this mean

General alarm means the machine has detected a serious fault. There is a section in the instruction manual that may help. If not, read on.

Persistent "General Alarm"

This means many things. If the transmission is not stuck, check the main boiler has not burnt out (open circuit). This happens when the thermoblock labyrinth runs dry and overheats, a common problem caused by leaks, limescale, milk blockages or water filter contamination. Replacing the boiler is the only fix, a difficult and expensive process, experienced fixers (or nothing to lose) only.

Transmission
If the transmission is getting stuck there may be obstructions, the lead screw may be worn or the limit switches could be faulty. If cleaning and grease on the screw/bearings don't help then replacement is a tricky job only for confident hands. Approach with caution.

Milk steamer not frofing properly

As others have pointed out the rubber 'O' ring seals may be missing or damaged preventing a good seal.
But another problem can be the water heater (horse-shoe shaped) not getting up to a high enough temperature. This can be caused by the thermal sensor going open circuit so indicating a high temperature to the electronic control system. When the unit is cold (at room temperature) the sensors should measure about 120K ohms resistance.
When this fault occurs your cappuccinos will be luke warm and the milk will splutter out of the spout.
Aso ensure you de-scale the unit as this will restrict the water flow and act as an insulator, reducing the effectiveness of the heaters.

My Coffee from my DeLonghi Magnifica does not seem to be hot enough.

Possible weakness in the thermostat which make the heaters cut off at a earlier state. So try to check the machine for any loose connection to the lines, the heaters or else the switch and thermostat must be looked into .

My Delinghi eam3500 has come up with general alarm, I have cleaned the unit like it says but it is still not working, when it turns on it says warming up, but it tries to warm up for ages but nothing...

The general alarm message after the machine taking too long to heat up -in deed shows a problem to reach the correct temperature.
So there are a number of possible causes:
the 2 heaters (water/steam) the NTCs(temperature control sensors)
the tempearature overheat-fuses. In my case it was the (water-)heater itself. Be sure to unplug the machine from power supply befor opening!!!
First test then-do the heaters warm up??.....carefull if they do-they are hot!!! If one of them doesn´t warm up- Unplug again!...and then measure the resistance of this heater-If the heater is ok,it should show around 50-58 ohms. If it shows indefinite resistance the heater is broken and you have to exchange it.
In case of both the heaters showing the~50ohms you will have to check the thermal resistors/fuse/NTC.
For me the two forums below wer of great help for me...of course they are in german...but didn´t you wish to learn a foreuage anyway???
Good luck and best regards
Wolfgang
