Question about Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine

1 Answer

Rancilio Silvia not heating

When turned on this morning the machine failed to heat up- no steam or hot water. All switch lights work and water pumps through. The machine is 18 months old. Tried turning it off at the wall with no result.

Unplug machine and remove the top panel, check the thermostats on of them tripped reset and you should be back in business.

No water/steam coming out of wand

hi there,
do you hear the pump running when you ask for water or steam? You should hear the pump continuously when you ask for hot water, and intermittently when the steam is dispensed.
No hot water or no steam could come from many causes:
valve not working or not actuated (control board), and also the switch that closes when the water knob is turned may be defective.
Do you hear that switch clicking when you open the water knob?
Difficult to help further with so little behaviour information.
Good luck,
M.

Gaggia Titanium bought new in Italy. tested it to make coffee ALL OK. tested to see if steam came out and it did. Took it on a plane with me plugged it in coffe good but steam does not come out for...

When you twist the steam knob all the way, it actuates an electrical switch. The first part of the turn just opens a mechanical valve to allow the steam or water to come out but doesn't turn on the heater nor does it start the pump. You need to turn it far enough to trip the electric switch that starts the heat and the pump.

If it still isn't working, then perhaps the switch was knocked loose when it was taken on the plane.

The rancilio coffee machine failed to heat up no steam or hot water but all switch lights work and water pumps through

Remove the top panel, and check the thermostats on the boiler there are 3 of them. One needs to be reset.

Rancilio Silvia: The steam works only for about 10 seconds

Remove the top panel and check the 3 thermostat on the machine one of them is not functioning properly, find the wire to the steam switch and trace it to the thermostat.

Saeco Italia SUP021 YR green lights and red water light flashing

You can't manually reset. The machine will have to do it. I had the same problem, two green flashing lights with one red (water) all 3 would just keep flashing and not turn solid. No coffee can be made or hot water. I could not pump prime. The problem was the steam wand was blocked with old milk residue. It needs unblocking or you will never pump prime. I could not unscrew the steam wand...so I let it sink in a glass full of hot water for a few minutes and then turned the water knob counter clockwise to push out the softened residue. After that, everything was good. When water started flowing out of the steam wand, the red light turned off and the green lights turned solid. The obvious answer to why you can't pump prime is there is a blockage somewhere and best to start with the steam wand. --Mabada

Starbucks Sirena. lights blink, won't heat.

johnshami had this solution on another post, and it worked for us:
  1. make sure the water in the tank is stone cold -- which is a no brainer since it will not heat h2o unless it's primed.
  2. take off steamer wand cover, turn the steamer knob clockwise till pump starts.
  3. then s*ck (as you would on a straw, with your lips sealed around the end of the steamer wand) the tip of the end of the metal tip hard until pump stops
  4. may need to do it a couple of times. yes this seems crazy, but it works! you are flushing out the vapor lock in the pump.

I have had this machine for four years now, and it is FAB!!! it does have an extra step to it- after you put in coffee and add water to the reservoir, you DO need to prime the pump. So here's what you have to do:

-Fill the reservoir with MORE water then you think you will need, fill the coffee filter with the standard amount of finely ground bean.
-Turn the machine to "on," making sure the "steam" switch and valve (knob) are off.
-Wait till the green "ready" light comes on, then put an empty cup under the steam wand and turn the valve on (the steam switch is still in the off position). Hot water will come out of the steam wand, allow it to flow until the "ready" light blinks off. Discard this.
-close the steam valve, stopping the flow of water.
-turn the "steam" switch into the on position, wait for ready light to come on again.
-put your milk container under the steam wand and froth to your heart's content (this machine makes GREAT frothed milk and you should use a large enough milk container to allow for that! *smile*)
-when you have finished with the frothing, close the valve and flick the "steam" switch back into the off position. You are now ready to make your espresso.
-push either of the two buttons, ie one or two cups, and the espresso will start to flow. There is a way to set the length of time for each of the two buttons, but I have had mine set perfectly for so long i don't know how to do it any more. Sorry!

This has been the best machine I've ever used, and has lasted me for years. I heartily recommend it!

Makes espresso, coffee, water, but will not steam

The pump has gone bad - through use. This is a common problem, and has to do with the "seals" that are in the pump. Since the pump generates high pressure and heat, over time, the seals will fail, and will be unable to generate enough pressure and heat to create steam. The only remedy is to have the pump replaced through the Breville Out of Warranty repair centers.
