Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

My son has connected the wrong power adaptor to his new Aria ATM-1 guitar effects pedal. The voltage was correct, but the polarity was wrong. I understand there was a little smoke emanating from the unit, but can see no damage to any components.Subsequent connection of the correct adaptor shows a completely dead unit, no LED operation, no audio out. I would appreciate a look at the circuit diagram in order to fault find the failed component. There is no apparent polarity protection cct. All ideas appreciated.

There may be a capacitor that can short out acting as a fuse. Would be right near the power input

Why are there only two dots when I power on?

1. Make sure that you have the correct power supply plugged in.
2. If you are using the BOSS power supply, it could be defective. Measure the voltage it is producing and make sure it is correct.
3. If the voltage is correct, then the problem is inside the unit, and it will need servicing.

Some possibilities:
  • Damaged on the DC-IN socket.
  • Broken solder joints on the center pin of the DC IN socket (see figure: pin 1 on DC208B).
  • Damaged (broken) in D2 or R54

The power on my banshee is coming on?

Check the polarity of the adapter, if it isn't the original one. Even if you have the right voltage, it still has to have the mA or higher but, most important is the polarity. Most guitar pedals are wired backward on the plug. The positive is on the outside ring of the plug and negative is in the middle. There should be a picture or diagram somewhere on the unit close to the plug to find out. If it is backwards, it could have damaged it, maybe not though. If it is ok, cut the plug off and switch the wires and check it. After all, it's not working now, it couldn't hurt.

I seemed to have blown a fuse, in my danelectro tuna melt pedal. i just need to know what component to get and where to get it if possible. joe

No fuses in these. If you have connected a wrong adapter, be it an AC, too high voltage, or wrong polarity, take it to a repair shop unless you are electronically adept.

G1x zoom guitar effects no power even using an adaptor

if you're using an adaptor other than the original zoom, make sure it's 300mA or more and try switching the polarity.

Hi.why my zoom g1x has no power.im using a universal adator...i am in phillpines.power volts here..220 volts.how is the setting of my adaptor then?

I have a ZOOM GX1XN and it doesn't like universal adapters much. Using one with the wrong voltage or polarity may permanently damage your pedal. Try to obtain a proper ZOOM AC adapter (part number AD-0006 or AD-16) if possible. These are dual voltage and will work equally well with both 220 and 110 volts. Failing that you need an adapter that will give a DC (direct current) output of 9 volts at 0.5amps - maximum 4.5 watts. The outer contact (sleeve) of the adapter needs to be positive (+ve) and the inside contact negative (-ve). Lots of universal adapters are the other way around with the sleeve being negative - but some have a multi-connector on the end with both positive and negative sleeves.

The Encore 4050A is a guitar amplifier. It's going thorugh batteries verty fast and, although it has a 12V power input, I don't have the power adaptor for it. Have searched a lot but can find no...

It will be best to have a good 12volt/5 amps adapter that will suit your amplifier. There are many model with SMPS units. This will give a clean supply and all you need will be to make the connections with the correct polarity.
Double check when you connect as a wrong polarity can damage the amplifier.

My Alesis Sr 16 was working fine a month ago, I pulled it out again, and it just wont turn on. The adapter works fine (I tried powering a guitar pedal with it). Is there a battery or some easy fix I could...

While your test running a guitar pedal is a partial test, the SR16 takes more current than a guitar pedal so the test may NOT be conclusive. When troubleshooting, always check all possibiliities as one can be led on a merry chase and spend a lot of money.

First thing is to check the input power connection. Many of these don't get fully seated and fail to connect.

The most common thing is to use the wrong adapter. ALWAYS make sure the brand on the adapter MATCHES the device manufacturer OR verify the POLARITY voltage and current rating against that marked on the device. Unfortunately most of the power connectors seem to fit even though they are wrong ones and some have larger hole in the fitting than the pin and fail to contact.

There is likely a battery backup within that PROBABLY requires soldering to change. It should be good for at least 5 years. Usually it will NOT prevent the power from turning on.

Guitar pedal power problems

Wow! All these are supposed to have a standard polarity connection.

Verify that this pedal has the opposite polarity of the power.

Frankly, having a second supply is expedient solution... The only other way is with blocking transformers or capacitive coupling...

I have never heard of a pedal having opposite polarity. PLEASE fill us in on this problem for future reference.
