If that will be the case you can check to RAC if they can replace the battery because you need this MP3 player to be on in order for you computer to detect it and for you also to be able to do a software update, if they cannot replace the battery you may need to have it replace with them..

One plug it to the usb device of your computer
Hold down power button for 10 seconds.
Go to the RCA website and download the latest firmware.
Install the firmware and windows will find the player.
Keep it into the usb till its fully charged.

There are a few things you can do.
One plug device into your usb of your computer.
Use the add new hardware fuction.
Have the computer search for new hardware.
It should not be able to find the OPAL.
After it fails to find the OPAL have the new hardware wizard look for MPT device. It should find it after that.
If it still not found bye the pc.
Goto RCA website and download the newest firmware.
Find your make and model and download the firmware.
After the new firmware is download make sure your OPAL is still connected to your usb device on my pc.
And install the new firmware. While the firmware installs windows should find the device.

On the back of the player is a small reset hole, use something non-metallic to press in there. Something like a toothpick will work great.
This will reset the device. If the problem persists after doing this you will need to contact RCA.

I know this is an old post but here you go...
You can try one of two things.
1st try to reset the device by holding the power button for more than 10 sec.
2nd You can try to reinstall the firmware by following these steps:
To update the firmware on your M4200 or MC4200 series, you will need to:
1. Connect your device prior to installation.
2. Click on the download link.
3. Select "Save" and select the appropriate folder to save the installer.
4. Run the downloaded installer and follow the instructions to complete installation.
