Question about Vizio GV42L 42 in. LCD Television

1 Answer

PIP My son used our cable box remote to turn on the TV and cable box. When I went to check on him he was watching the TV and the picture was small and in the right hand corner. I asked him what had happened and he said he didn't know. We programmed the cable box remote to work the TV as well. When I asked him what he did he said "I just turned it on." I suspect he may have hit a button that threw the TV setting off. We have tried everything to get it back to normal picture mode but nothing has worked. We even tried restoring the TV's factory settings but that too has not worked. Please help!

Look for a "PIP" (Picture In Picture) button on the remote or in the TV's menu. I suspect that it has been pushed but there is not a second source to view. That would explain the smaller version in the corner.

I'm trying to hook up picture in a picture with my TV using the HD dual tuner DVR DC H 6416 converter box. Is there a place that I can connect a cable to the box that has video out to use individually for...

The TV requires two inputs to use the PIP function. Your setup box Has multiple outputs, but the same picture comes out of all of them. The only way you can use PIP in your TV is to split the signal and connect it to both the set-top box and the TV. However; you will not receive the additional channels that the setup box picks up unless you use 2.

Some set top boxes already have PIP built in. If it does you can view a PIP display even if your TV does not have that feature. Because the cable box has 2 tuners built in they are designed to do two different things at one time. If yours has PIP capability they will proudly and prominently tell you about it in the instruction manual..

What are instructions for Split-screen TV? Used before, forgot.

You are referring to a picture-in-picture function on hour TV. It is usually done by a button on your remote control marked PIP - picture-in-picture. If your TV doesn't have this function you can get it by using your SET-TOP BOX, which supplied by your TV cable company. All modern remote controls fro those boxes have that ability. In this case you will be able to watch two channels at the same time, switching them around and control them the way you want.

We have an NEC Plasma 60xp10 tv and NEC RU-M111 remote controller. we accidentally hit the pip button and now we can't get it to turn off. a black small box randomly pots on and off.

The black box is likely in the CC area labeled TEXT and can come from the set or a box connected for signal.

The other issue sounds like PIP or picture in picture is engaged.

Both issues may require the original remote to turn them off.

How do you get the picture in picture to work? What two sources can you use, a cable box and what?

The Picture in Picture (PIP) on VIZIO televisions works on multiple input sources. This means you have to have signal or a device connected to more than one input on the television and have both inputs selected to display the information going to them. Here is an example. Let's say you have an HD cable box connected to your television and you would like to have more than one channel displayed on the screen in order to keep an eye on both football games at the same time. With one device connected that's not going to work out the way our TV functions. What you want to do is get a coaxial splitter and two extra coaxial cables; these can be found anywhere home theater equipment is sold. Then follow these steps.

1. Turn off both your cable box and television.

2. Take the coaxial cable that comes OUT from the wall and connects to the IN of your cable box and disconnect it.

3. Connect that cable to the IN on your coaxial splitter.

4. Connect your two extra coaxial cables to the OUTs on your coaxial splitter. We will call them cable 1 and Cable 2, just because.

5. Connect cable 1 directly to the DTV/TV input on your television.

6. Connect Cable 2 directly to the IN on your cable box, this will be the same connection you removed it from in step #2. Your HD cable box should still be connected to your television with either an HDMI cable or Component cables (Identified by their Green, Red, Blue colors for video and Red and White cables for audio.)

7. Power on both the cable box and your television. Using the INPUT button on your VIZIO remote select the input connection where your cable box is located your cable box picture should come up on the Main screen.

8. Press the PIP button on your VIZIO remote to bring up the small box in the corner. Press the PIP input button until you select the TV input and you should be ready to go. You may need to perform a channel scan with your TV tuner to locate all available channels before you do this step. In order to understand better how to perform a channel scan please check under the F.A.Q.s in the discussion area of your particular model television.

In order to change channels in the small screen use the PIP CH - and + buttons located near the bottom of the remote. You can swap picture in the Main and Sub screens using the swap button and swap which screen will sound off its audio by using the AUDIO button. You might notice an X next to some of the selections in the INPUT and PIP INPUT screens when you have PIP activated. That means that input selection is unavailable and cannot be used. For example, if you have the input TV selected on your main screen then if you press the PIP INPUT button and bring up that input menu you will see X's next to the TV and AV selections. The X's mean that when you have TV on the main screen you won't be able to use TV or AV on the small screen. Instead you would need to use any of the input selections that do not have an X attached to them.

Vizio remote

The remotes for the TV and Direct TV box are universal remotes that can operate very basic functions for whatever else they are programmed to control. If you can program the TVs remote to operate the Direct TV box it will basically only control power and channel. Maybe something else, but not much. The same goes for the Direct TV remote. It will control basic functions on the TV; power, channel & volume. Best bet would be to purchase a universal remote that can learn functions from the original or just keep both remotes available by the TV.

PIP (Picture In Picture) - Your television should have the capability because it has two built in tuners. It can show two channels at the same time or show one channel and one video source (whatever is connected to the audio/video inputs). However, because you are using DTV (Direct TV) you are very limited because you are not using the built in tuners on your television. You should be able to see one picture from the DTV channel and one from lets say your DVD player. If your DTV box has two tuners built in then you should have the PIP capabilities from your DTV and not your television. I'm guessing your DTV is a single tuner (one satellite cable to your box). If you want to watch two different channels you'll need to either upgrade your box or attach another box to your television.

Option: you could also connect an antenna to your television this way you can use the PIP function. Obviously you'll only be able to view whatever local stations you can get with the antenna. Depending on where you live you might or might not have a lot of channels to choose from.

PIP like this is not possible using any dish or satellite broadcasting companies as all of their signals must go through their boxes to be decoded. The televisions internal tuner can not handle those signals and turn them into anything watchable. If you are using one of these companies contact them to see if they offer a set top box that does PIP on its own and doesn't need the televisions help to accomplish it.

No picture in picture regardless of any way I wire the tv HELP

Thank you for providing the exact brand and model number of your product.

What it is: PIP lets you watch a second program in a little window. More-elaborate versions can resize the window, move it around the screen, create still or multiple still images, or simply divide the screen into two same-size pictures, often called "picture-outside-picture" (POP).

dfbe858.gif
What it isn't: PIP has a dirty little secret, though: If you use an external tuner such as a cable box or a satellite receiver, you can watch only one program at once. If some of your channels are unscrambled, you can watch those on the second window, and you can usually watch other sources such as VHS or DVD on it, as well. But even with two-tuner PIP, a single cable/satellite box will prevent you from watching two live scrambled channels simultaneously unless the box itself has two-tuner PIP.
