You've probably found the answer by now but, if not, you should have a USB cord with your unit. Plug that cord into your computer and a link should come up that directs you to the site. If not, go to magellan.com and download update program. There's also a support number, 800-707-9971, and an online chat function on their site that can offer additional help. Good luck.
I don''t know if they changed the 1440 or not but the reset on mine is integral with the power switch. Push it to the left to turn it on, or push it to the right to reset it. This is from the off position of course.
These are tips I have used and given others about this series Magellan units. Make sure you have external power hooked up for best results.
Magellan RoadMate models 1340, 1440, and 1470 are normally reset as follows: The reset button is located on the right side of the unit. Press a blunt object like a long-shaft ballpoint pen or a cut off toothpick into the small hole and hold for approximately 15 seconds. The unit should do a fresh reboot. Sometimes these GPS units can be reset by holding the Power button down for 10-15 seconds to completely shut the unit down. Then, do the same procedure for 10-15 seconds again, to power it back on. Also, here's another procedure you really only try as a last resort, if the unit is on, but acting up with various menus and functions. Use this very carefully... While on the main Menu Bar at "System Settings", tap the left corner twice, right corner twice, left corner once, and finally, right corner once. You will see a 'Hidden' menu with a "Reset for first use". Press that option and the unit will perform a hard reset. Hopefully, you can continue all you setups from this point. Also you can download a complete manual from this link: http://www.magellangps.com/assets/manuals/Magellan_RoadMate_1440_EN.pdf The manual won't tell you all these little tricks, so it might be a good idea to make a hard copy of these notes (in case you ever need them again...lol). I hope this helps. Please let me know how it turns out, and contact me if you need further help. Regards, Bill
In order to "register" your Mag_1440 (or any other Magellan), you need to create an account on the Magellan_GPS Web-Site. You will basically supply your name, address, tel_number, e_mail, and the model and serial_number of your GPS... Once you have created your account and registered you GPS, you may be prompted with Links for software and/or map updates... As far as "charging" the 1440/1470, you only need to plug the GPS_Unit into the Car/Auto_Cigarette outlet via the 12v power cord that came supplied in your package... One can also use any standard 120v (AC) to Mini_USB charger (i.e Motorola Razr Cell-Phone AC_Power-Pack) to charge up the GPS unit...Unfortunately, the Computer_USB to Mini_USB cable (in the box) supposedly will NOT power/charge up the GPS... This Mini_USB cable is used to download the latest firmware (v2-20) onto the GPS (approx. 75_MB)... Therefore, before you attempt to download the latest firmware onto the 1440/1445/1470, be sure that it has been sufficiently charged via the Car_Adpater, or an auxilliary AC-Power Adpater... Hope this helps...
