Question about Refrigerators

2 Answers

I have an Amana TR18V1W refrigerator that is approx 10 years old. Had it in storage for four years and is in the garage now. I plugged it in and it immediately started. However, after ten minutes it tripped the circuit breaker. I once again plugged it in the socket and the same result. The coils are clean.

Good day,
After that much down time, moisture could have caused just about any electrical component in the machine to short to ground, and there are many.
However, to start, the compressor should be checked. The protective cover on the side of the compressor should be removed, then the starting components removed from the pins of the compressor.
There are 3 pins sticking out of the body of the compressor.
Using a VOM meter, each pin should be checked to ground, the best ground being a clean bare copper line coming off of the compressor body.
All 3 of the pins should show no resistance to ground. If any do, you have a bad compressor.
At the same time you should check the resistance between al pins. They vary by model, but should be between 8 and 30 ohms at the very most.

If the compressor checks O.K. then you will have to start to check all electrical components for grounding. There are many and will have to be done one at a time.

If this is plugged into a GFI outket then that is the issue. You do not plug fridges into GFI outlets.

Not cooling sat in storage 1 year get it home and compressor runs and no cool

Hello Jim;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

I would professionally rank Amana at the top of the list for reliability and low maintenance.

If you read your owners manual it states your unit must be stored in a controlled environment. Otherwise your warrantee is void.

I have made service calls on units that were less that a year old. They were in a garage (Not controlled environment) and the warrantee was voided.

What happens is the drastic changes of temperature from winter to summer expands and contracts the brazed seal system joints and these joint leak.
Also, what happens is the condensate from humidity corrodes the electrical components as well as the control boards.

You can call a local service company to check out what needs to be replace. You are probably look at a $350.00 + service call, if it can be restored.

I have a u1422sogb/10 oven. It has not been used before (been in storage for four years) Just had it installed and every time I switch the SMALL oven on it trips the house circuit board

the wiring is wrong, you have a short to earth or its been wired to the sparker instead of the cooker switch.
bell me & ill talk you throu it...... don't start messing about with wires if your not sure, coz you'll start frying pun intended.

My refrigerator is six years old and for the past two months is making a loud buzzing noise. The frequency has increased over time. What could it be? It's an Amana side by side model ASD2626HE. Sounds like...

Saw your post a week late but the sound could be the start relay on compressor is weaking or if the water is turned off to ice maker the water control valve will try to fill ice maker if the ice make switch is left on and has no water. I will send a manual shortly, Sea Breeze

Our garage refrigerator is getting old and we wan ted to replace it. 2 people have told us if a newer one is in an area where it gets 40 ior below we may have problems. True? How old must it be to avoid...

All of the new one will not work well in a garage. Your best bet will be a unit that is more than 7 years old. If you cant find one try a Hotpoint, this is GEs little brother. The hotpoints have an older design. I use one in my garage Model # HTS18GBSWW You should be able to find this at any appliance store around $500.

My Amana SSD22N fridge is not cold in the freezer--ice cream is cold, but very soft. The setting is up all the way. Ice making is slow/limited. I noticed the door gasket is very hot near the handles. ...

Hello winkey,

Check if the freezer is packed to the hilt so as the packages cover the air vents in the rear of the freezer?
The freezer compartments share the cold air with the rest of the fridge and when blocked can upset the balance of cold air and the proper circulation.

How old is the refrigerator?
Let me know.

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.
