Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3 Full Version OEM for PC

2 Answers

I have Windows XP. I have files 2 years ago, that I couldn't delete. Every time I delete one of the files, I get "Cannot delete. Cannot read from the source file or disk.". I also tried to delete them using the command prompt, but the CMD didn't delete them. Then I realized that the hidden attribute is watermarked, and I cannot uncheck it. Any ideas of how to delete those files? Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

I had the same problem and found it was a virus, not saying this is your problem but was mine I let it go till it stopped working then I had to format and reinstall, it also would not let me delete my own documents I had written so be prepared just in case it is a virus. No software picked it up by the way and it did it to two of my computers.

Unfortunately after reading around, it looks like you have to uninstall Windows Live Messenger then reinstall it.

First, try a registry cleaner. After that, right click on the files and check properties. Uncheck read only.

My bad files cannot be deleted!!!

I would Boot into "DOS" or to the C:> prompt WITHOUT loading windows, (from the same window that you enter safe mode from), and find the suspect files and delete them.  del <filename.ext>

hello, where do you find this files? maybe its a permission issue.
first go on the map ->tools->folder options and view
and unmark "user simple file sharing" ->ok

then rightclick on the file and "properties" ->security tab
check the permissions. click edit ->add everyone and set full rights. try then delete the file.

Hopefully your other OS's are on a different drive letter (d: or e: for example). As long as they are then there is no conflict with XP.

You could effectively remove access to them by editing c:\BOOT.INI . Note that you will have to right click boot.ini, select "properties" and remove the "read only" and "hidden" properties for the file before editing it. I would recommend making a copy of the boot.ini first for a backup.

Then just open it with notepad. There will be one line for each OS in there. just delete the extra lines. Then you can just erase or format the partitions for the other OS's.
