How is the setup? You have a bar that is attached to the primary and the tensioner rides up and down in some notches? If so, that is the old setup in the big twins as well, the tensioner went up against the chain at the bottom run of chain and pushed up. Hope this helps.
The primary chain tensioner on the 1979 Sportster (Not XLX) lays under the chain at the bottom of the primary case. There is a stud that passes through the primary cover with a 1/2" Nylock nut.
The teflon/nylon pad is retained by the steel rocker bracket and lays against the chain. When the adjustment stud is used (points straight down out of primary cover) it presses the pad upward into the chain taking up the slack. Proper adjustment is about 1/2" at top plug cold, 5/8" hot/warm.
