What makes a tv screen turn blue and shut off

Hello jamdevdm,

Welcome, and thank you for using FixYa!

To get to the point on your TV issue: the blue screen is the Blue Projection drive firing, but it would appear that non of the other colors are firing (Green and Red). It sounds like this TV will need some major diagnostics to see if the other Jets are dead or if the power control board is dead.
I recommend that you take this TV to a local TV Repair Shop and have it looked at, if it is worth it to you.
In most cases, a repair of the nature; it is just as cheap to replace the set than pay for parts and labor.

Have a great day!

Blue line, blue out of sinc along botttom 1/4 of tv

If this is a Rear Projection T.V, your CRT is going bad. You can take the front cover off and make slight adjustments on the blue screen control to get rid of any lines, as far as the blurriness of blue, that part is 500 dollars to fix. The most you can do is just get rid of the lines. There's a black box. Make sure you are very gentle with your adjustments. Just turn it back to how it was if the screen shuts off. I recommend turning down the brightness of the T.V. before you do this repair.

Blue haze spot-yellow tint

I have the same problem with blue haze that just spread out on model 55VS69A ,
tv is almost 2 years old. i called hitachi and they advised to call a local repair center to check the tv...they confirmed Optical Block (light engine ) replacement light engine cost $1400 and labour $400, so i called back hitachi and they said they will provide light engine and will have to pay labour!....this is not right paying out of pocket for a tv less than 2 years old....I am not sure if the issue will resurface again...more likely ....Hitachi is supposed to issue a recall or atleast like sony did to cover all cost for there defective TV's....I will NEVER buy hitach again.

Hitach SUCKS.

Blue waves

You need convergence circuit repair. The cost depends on where you live and who you call.

In Calgary, Canada typical TV shops want $300 to $650 for convergence repair. They will include cabinet damage and wall scratches for free.

It is a difficult technical repair to attempt as a rookie tech. It is even more difficult if alignment is required or any secondary problems are encountered. If you have no tools, no experience soldering or doing electronic repair; you may end up with scrap or paying a high price for someone to fix after your attempt to repair.

Blue Screen and TV shuts off

Here's a shortcut to what the blinking codes mean.
http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/08/sony-tv-led-blinking-codes-what-does-it.html
Strange how some people have 5 blinks. Most with this problem have 8 blinks (like myself)

I still have the blue-flash-then-shutting-off problem.. (8 blinks meaning voltage error) but I did fix the blue lines.. The lines across the screen can be very easily fixed whether they're blue green or red. . No, I mean REALLY easy. Took me longer to get the cover off. Once the front cover is off it takes 10 seconds. This link was also posted recently in one of the posts below as a solution..
http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/06/sony-projection-tv-red-line-repair.html
(My lines didn't look like the ones in the picture mine were several evenly spaced blue arcs)

After some research I believe the flash/shutting off problem means the CRT is going. I've also read that it might be the D-board and I'm not even sure that that is... But If it is indeed the CRT then I'll let you know it's very difficult to find a replacement blue CRT as this part has been discontinued.. but I did eventually find an alternate to an alternate part (yes that's the 3rd alternate !)) online for $256. Here: http://store.tv-repair-service-salinas.com/8-733-649-35.html

If you're bold enough to attempt that then good luck and please let us know if it worked.
Or another alternative is there's a whole lot of Boxing Day sales goin' on right now.

My tv too had a blue screen problem. Then it started to shut down after staying on for less than a minute. I thought that I would with a huge repair bill but I followed the directions at this link: http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/06/sony-projection-tv-red-line-repair.html and now my tv works perfectly.

I am getting 5 blinks

If the whole screen turns a bright blue and shuts down then you may have a bad blue crt. This will need to be replaced plus adjustments/alignments. Get an authorized Sony servicer to do the repair. Good Luck

Blue Screen and TV shuts off

Yes, you are correct on the phrasing. The CRT's were a common issue with these units and all three must be replaced as sooner or later the green will follow the other two CRT's. It was a great model and had a beautiful picture when operating normally. The CRT's are costing about 200 each for rebuild as the green and blue are mostly no longer available. Your repair cost are going to approach $1000.00 or more.
