My Dyson upright is approximately four-five years old. It is series number 488-US -D 82082. The individual tube connected to the handle sucks up, but the base vacuum will not suck up anything.

If the tubes work, but the floor cleaner part does not suck, then the channel leading to the compressor is blocked. There is quite a narrow channel leading away from the floor brushes that is prone to blocking. Try unscrewing the base to allow you to see up this channel, and scoop out any material that is jammed there- a piece of bent wire clothes hanger is good for this. Form a small hook on the end and probe away.

Dyson vacuum, Vacuuming when I sucked up some wires. I pulled them out and the vacuum started making a loud noise. Now when I use it that happens and now it sparks.. What should I do?

quit using it and take it to a repair shop sounds like your motor is shorting out. However i would suggest buying a new vac since dyson motor replacement can be quite pricey.

I have a hoover Dust Manager DM6200. actually it is my friend's. She said it wasn't working well, so I took a look. It wasn't picking up, and seemed to be spreading dirt in fact. I emptied...

Hey Julie,

Hopefully we will get this solved together.

To me, this problem sounds like either the filters are choked up and cannot breathe, OR.... the bagless cannister is not quite sitting in the machine properly.
Honestly, I am more leaning towards the cannister not quite in properly, that is assuming that everything is out of the suction hose.

Start with the process of elimination. Remove and clean the filters with a paint brush or other brush. Get as much dirt and debris off of them as you can and replace them into the machine.
Turn on the machine, and using only the hose attachment, feel if the suction is there. If not, try a re-alignment of the cannister and check the hose. a small coin or marble running through the hose will tell you if there is still a blockage in there.
Where the attachment hose connects to the bottom of the machine could also be blocked up as well. This will also give the same effect of the dirt blowing out the bottom of the machine.

Lastly, it is also quite possible that the belt has stretched or worn out. This too will contribute to it not picking up.
Let me know if this helps, and we will go from there.
Good luck,
Mark

Quit sucking....seems to be the long narrow strip

yes its usually the squeege strip in the front that wears out. the two tabs on the front release the assy then there are two screws on the inside and one screw on the side of the squeegee in the center

My Oreck XL has quit sucking. The brush turns but

Same problem here with XL9100. Bag would not expand implying no suction. Motor ran and brushes turned. Easy disassembly using common tools found that a plastic bag had been sucked up and caused a blockage prior to the impeller. Cleaned up, reassembled, and everything worked fine after that.

Not sucking up the dirty water or it's sucking up water but it's not filling the recovery tank. I've tried reattaching the lid of the recovery tank and it doesn't look like it is sitting quite right.

This is one possibility. other things to look are the screen filter on the machine. intake hose behind the motor. ensure that accessory hose cover is closed when extracting water from the floor.

Restrictive valve

The foam filter on the bottom of the tank lid is too far up. Pull it down so you have at least a 1/4 inch gap from the top.

Bar doesn't turn unless vacuum is pushed.

Oh for crying out loud! That button has been there since day one but I NEVER looked at it! I guess I thought is there to be symetrical! I also sucked up carpet thread. I was okay for a while but when I then sucked up my dustcloth the brush quit. Usually this stuff happens right before the guests are due so at least this time I got to fix it without pressure!
