Question about Shoprider Sprinter XL4

1 Answer

Shoperrider no drive just a click

I have a shoprider sprinter xl4. It has been laid up for about 4 months.
Have charged the batteries but all we get is a click from the rear like a relay switching in.
Have pushed the circut breaker but iI don't think it had tripped.
The graph shows that the battery are fully charged but I wonder if this is a false reading
It was working perfectly before its rest. The scotter was not touched in the time it was laid up HELP PLEASE

Thanks for the tip. Have tried it but no go
The carbon brushes looked as if they were brand new. They slid in nicely. I have measured the voltage that is coming out of the control box and it appears to be about 7.5 volts It climbs quite slowly upto that voltage. There was I thought a slight movement in the wheel but harldy perceptable. When the motor is engaged. Could it be that although the batteies show 12,7 volts thee is not enough amperage in them to start the moter. But the lights do not dim etc when engageing the motor

Hi again Scooterworks. I tried the carbon brushes and they were hot after trying to start the scooter.Could it be that the moter has siezed. or could it be something to do with the freewheel device, not engaging All the best Nigel

Hi. Sounds to me as if you have a sticky carbon brush in the motor. Each brushe is held in the motor by small black plastic or bakealite cap that screw in the outside or the brush holders. If these caps are not tight enough then the brush or the spring will arc from the side of the brush holder. This causes the brush to become jamed, and does not contact with the commutator on the armature.
You need to remove the brushes, check that they slide freely in the brush holders, fit new springs if neccessary, and reassemble. If the brushes are too tight, the file very carefully on the sides to allow them to move freely. Do not tighten the black plastic caps too hard or they will break, but they have to be snug. Be carefull.
Good luck. Neil.

This solution worked for me....the plastic cap was crossthreaded and the brush damaged by arcing causing damage to the brass of the guide in the motor. I filed the brush and cleaned up the damaged brass...now its all good

Why won't batteries charge?

Those chargers are designed to turn solid green when the batteries are fully charged. When batteries are less than new and have some time on them they will not charge as much as a new one. It is conceivable that either the battery condition is not the best there is or that perhaps there may be something wrong with the charger.

I suspect it is the new batteries not being so new.

My wife inherited a shoprider scooter, but I am not exactly sure how to remove the battery as there was no manual with the scooter. I am not even sure what model it is because the decals are worn...

w beck you have to remove the seat by pulling it out of of the seat post and then remove the shroud or cover by pulling it straight up You will then be able to see the batteries. Your scooter equires two 12 volt batteries probably U1 batteries Hope this helps

Shoprider xl4 deluxe has no power on inclines. lucky if it goes a couple of blocks even on the slightest grade ang the battery gauge goes to 1 light. Even with a fully charged battery has no guts on hills...

`Hi. Sounds very much like a loose battery terminal, or a faulty battery lead connector.
I have also had a few machines that can start jerking because of worn or stuck motor brushes.
Also check the high/low speed switch if you have one, they sometimes cause problems.
How old are your batteries, worn out batteries can still be " fully charged", but are unable to supply the current ( amps ), that the motor needs.
Good luck. Neil.

Shoprider laid up for a couple of months Now only goes click

Hi Nigel. Sounds like the brake assembly ( Free-wheel ) is not releasing. Can you manually release the free-wheel and push to scooter? If you cant push it the the brake solenoid might be the fault. I have had a few over the years that have done this. The resistance through the coil should be approx 50 ohm's.
Otherwise the motor might be burnt out. Motors that are burnt out give a very distinctive burnt varnish smell. Good luck. Neil.
