Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I had an extra fridge outside during the spring and late winter. I live in the south (averge winter temp 65), so it worked fine. Now it is 90 so it stopped working. I made room for it inside two days ago, but it is still not cooling. Is this something that can be easily fixed? Or have I ruined teh fridge?

Hi, there are many people that have this problem and are searching for answers as to what to do and what could be causing this problem. It seems to be weird that the freezer is working fine and the fridge side is not. Why would the coldest side be good and the warmer side not?

The answer to these questions lies in the way the freezer/fridge combo works. The freezer is where the cooling coils are located. Then air is moved over the coils and circulated through the fridge side by a small blower or fan. The problem arises when the air is not circulated for some reason.

The reasons the air is not moving is usually two reasons

  1. The fan or blower has failed.
  2. The coil is covered over with ice and blocks the air flow.

The first reason is pretty simple to fix, you simply replace the air circulator and things are good again.
The second reason can be more difficult.
1. The timing device that runs the defrost cycle of the refrigerator is defective.
2. The heater coil that melts the water is shorted or not working

Usually the first thing to check is the heater coil. If there is resistance through the coil then most likely it is still good.
The timing device can be an advanced defrost control board or a mechanical timing device.
If the heater coil checks out to be good then the problem should be the timer.

For most situations, unplugging the refrigerator and allowing it to defrost on it’s own will get you going temporarily, till parts can be shipped to you. That will melt the ice and give you a few days or a couple of weeks till it ices up to the point where it will not work again.

So you can see here, the problem can usually be traced to one of three things.
  1. The fan or blower
  2. The timer device
  3. The electric heater coil
By methodically checking these parts you can isolate your problem and fix it.

Take care

Maybe I worded my question the wrong way. Neither the fridge nor the freezer is working. Neith side is working.

Hi, The problem is that the automatic defrost timer is not working, and as a result no cold air is blowing into the Fridge and freezer.

    Take care

Freezer not working when its cold in the garage.

Where do you keep the fridge? If you keep it outside then most likely the condensor coils in the freezer may be freezing over and the only way to fix that is to keep it above 40 degrees outside the fridge.

I live in the northeast, can a mini pomegranate tree survive the winters?

The tree should have no problem surviving the winter as long as it is in a pot that you can bring in side. During the cold months, the tree should be brought in and put next to a window, preferably the sunniest one in your home. As soon as it starts to warm up, bring it outside. Mini pomagranates tend to blossom and produce fruit in late June/July/August.

Frididaire fridge mod.#FRT21IL5DBA 4 1/2 yrs old. In outside storage room of carport. Stopped running after stretch of low 20's temps. in winter of 2009 Unplugged it, checked coils. Plugged it in when...

Well it should be fine when it warms up, these are not designed to run in anything below 60 degrees, when the temp gets too low it confuses the thermostat and it shuts everything off, as long as the room is above 60 should work fine.

A/C air sometimes cold, sometimes not on VW Beetle 2001 Turbo

AC will not work with temps are cold even when it is turned on. The air is colder cause the temp is colder. The AC cycles in hot weather because the AC charge is low and needs recharging. You will know this if you open the hood run the AC and you will hear the clicking sound of the AC compressor magnetic clutch. You can recharge it easily buy buying a compatible can of refrigerant. I suggest buying the kit with the gage so you don't overcharge the system which will cause freeze ups

Entirely possible and in range. Depends on outside temps and type of driving. The radiator is colled by electric cooling fans, controlled by temp sensors. Fans should come on automatically when a/c is turned on

Freezer doesn't freeze in winter?

Domestic refrigerators nowadays are designed not to operate at temperatures less than 45 degrees. First, if it's 45 degrees in the house, people probably are not living there. 2nd, 45 degrees keeps food refrigerated. 3, if people are not living in a space, then they don't need to keep frozen food.

This is a result of the changes in refrigerants we've been going through since 1992.
If you want an outdoor freezer, buy one, and make sure it's designed to be used in a non conditioned space.
