Walk in cooler cycleing

Went to start a walk-in cooler after years of down time. The compressor will run for about 10 seconds then shut off for about 30 seconds then run for another 10 & shut off for another 30. Any ideas?

Hi,
It has lost some freon and is not charged correctly...the unit is pumping down and shutting off on low pressure and then after being off a bit the pressure comes up and it restarts...
Need to check the charge and top it off and you will be good to go..

most likely that walk-in cooler is low on refrigerant (freon). I made video with the same issue. This refrigerator has small leak, i tried to find leak with soap bubbles, but no luck, so end up charging it with freon and add leak dye, so next time I can find that leak for sure.

The best guess is that you have a bad thermostat. When the compressor shuts off it has to stay off for a long enough period of time for the low pressure high pressure to equalize. If it turns the compressor off and back on immediately it can't start against the heavy load created by these unequal pressures. If it will start every time after sitting for 10 minutes the thermostat is making it short cycle.

My immediate reaction would be to cut your losses and buy a new unit as sooner or later you will run into a part that is no longer available.

@50/300 I assume it's a med. temp R-22 pump down walk in. Head pressure sounds a little high, probably been overcharged to compensate for a restriction in the metering device (or malfunctioning TXV). Check the solenoid (if pump down), metering device, and filter driers first. If that fails, lineset restriction or non-condensables/water in the charge would be next on my list.

I have a beverage air kegerator that seems to work fine, but the evaporator fan runs constantly. Is it supposed to run constantly, or is it supposed to cycle on and off with the compressor, etc.?

Most evaporator fans run all the time. This is mainly to use the air flow to assist in melting off any frost build up during the compressor off cycle. If that fan shut off with the compressor the coil will have a tendency to freeze up. :)

If it has worked for a year and your able to choose different cycles with the same result. It seems to functions with one common element failing. If the control unit cant detect how full the machine is with water it will shut down. Sounds like a water problem steming from your pressure switch. Not sure which model you have but usually it will sit on the water pump or under the console with a clear hose if under the console. If so a quick test of attaching an ohm meter set on continuity then blowing lightly to see if under pressure the switch reacts by closing if it doesnt then the switch is bad.

Compressor wont start

It is probably a failed run capacitor for the compressor. Without the capacitor, the motor can't even try to run, but it will draw extreamly high amperage until it trips the thermal overload (avarage trip time 5-10sec) after it has a few second for the safety to cool off, it will try again. Either that or the compressor truly is seized

when its running how hot are the sides the starting amps are too high and 1.5 running amps ain't bad now the the cut in cut out are too high if you look on the dial that the mid point settings that's where you should have it not on 1 1 is hot set it on the straight line that's where you should do all your testing colder settings go up not down you could be overheating the compressor by making it come on too quick the freezer should be about -10 or so do you see any gaps in the gasket

I would try to start the unit with only the fan running at first. If it stays running then cycle on the compressor and see how it does. If the unit does not operate when compressor is turne on then we have to dig deeper into that.
