First thing I would check is the air filter. Then the belt that drives the wheels. Open up the belt area and clean. Last I would check the carb. Good luck...Lee

The stalling is due to contaminated fuel, first remove the air filter clean and or replace, next remove the fuel from the tank, reach under the carb and tank the clamp and the fuel line off the carb, let it drain off, next step remove the float bowl(metallic round approx.2" diameter) loosen the bolt that holds it on mounted dead center of the float bowl, drop the float bowl but before you do make a visible mark on the outside of it center of the carb. body and facing outward to identitify the proper way it goes back on, then inspect the condition of the fuel in the bowl, if its cloudy, dirty, varnished, or has signs of water contamination, get a can of carburator cleaner and spray all the tiny orifices clear using the plastic straw that comes with the cleaner, also check the center bolt if it has a small orifice in the bolt be sure to spray that clear too as that is considered the main gas valve(wear eye and hand protection). Be careful of the black rubber seal gasket that seals the top of the float bowl to the carb. base don't want it to leak when you put it all back together.
Reinstall the float bowl, fuel line & clamp, fuel tank, air filter, and fill tank with "fresh" 87 octane regular fuel, please don't forget to always have a can of starter fluid, spray a little in the carburator and prime the ball at least 5 times, starting fluid will help to make the starting of every gas motor that much easier on your know the pulling syndrome.....pull the cord....walla!!! You are done and the mower now runs like new!!
Happy Mowing!!!

Will not prime with primer bulb , can squirt gas in carb and get running then while running you push the primer button it chokes down the engine .

Does it stay running after you squirt fuel in the carb opening? If yes, then there may be a pin hole leak in the hose going from the fuel tank to the primer bulb and it is adding air to your carb.

Engine starts but won't continue to run. Choke doesn't stay closed after starting. will stay running only if I hold choke closed manually.

let it warm up with choke closed manually after it starts to stall with choke closed open it and dont let it stall u can learn to play with the choke a little to get it to run right GOOD LUCK!

Can you run your lawn boy mowers without the primer button being used?

Yes you can. The only reason small engines have the primer button/bulb is to get gas to the carburator to make it easier to start it. If your mower starts OK without using the primer bulb you will not harm the mower.

Mower wont stay running

Pump the primer handle, bleed the air and pump the primer handle until it becomes very hard to pump. Try it again. Repeat as necessary to remove the air from the system.

Mower will not stay running unless primer button continuouly pushed. Gas seems to not be independently flowing, requires manual priming to stay running. As soon as primer gas used, will stop running.

The tube in the bottom of the carb. is probably clogged. Remove the carb, and bowl and try spraying WD-40 through the tube, it should spray into the venturi if it doesn't try using a tip cleaner to unclog the tube.
