Question about Computers & Internet

3D Video Card

I would like to upgrade my video card, but want to chose one that will work. I emailed HP and this is the answer that I received.

I have verified your PC specifications and found that the PC is bundled with "argon-ULA" motherboard with GeForce4-MX420 AGP card.

However, the system specifications tell that you can install any PCI graphics cards or AGP card. If you want to install PCI 3D graphic card then that can be installed in the PCI slot. Please note that you may also have to upgrade the power supply as some of these graphics cards consume more power. Hence it is recommended you ask for the power requirements of the card, while purchasing so that you can upgrade to the recommended power supply.

Before I conclude I would like to list the important things that have to be considered before installing a video card:

1 Select a compatible PCI express x16 video card.
2 Check the minimum requirements the computer must meet.
3 Compatible power supply required.

You can purchase the video card at any local computer store or visit a HP reseller.

Can you suggest some graphic cards that I might choose from?

Thanks,

Judy

Between $100.00 and $200.00, if possible. Might go a little higher if it would improve the performance.

Check these answers / Options

1 - Upgrade Hardware

You don't describe your video card and processor specs however, there are some basic parameters
- If you have an onboard video card you can't upgrade just the video card, because it is an integrated unit, but you can update all the drivers
- In my opinion, onboard video cards and chipsets(almost all of them) have low performance for rendering purposes
- In my experience, just a better video card doesn't solve the issue--> you'll need a good "render set"--> good processor (2.6 GHz or up)+ plenty of memory (4 Gb or up) + a good videocard (512 Mb or up).

2 - Punch files

- If you are working with a heavy file, including lots of furniture, topo, etc, you should upgrade the hardware elements, but the issue is more related with the file
- If you have a slow performance with any Punch file (with just a wall, for example), then yes, a hardware upgrade is in order.
But even this, will depend of the computer / processor you have. All the elements work together as I stated above

3 - Tips

- Click on the pencil/plan icon (depending of your versions) at the top of the LiveView window (Render and Navigation Options). Clicking on the different icons you can disable temporarily the lights or 3D objects, or topo etc. This will speed the rendering during the working process

- Use View--> Render Clear view--> use this during the elaboration time

- Try to apply the 3d objects (cabinets, furniture, etc) and topography at last

- You can turn off the "Undo" feature--> Edit--> Undo preferences. This will speed your work. Just remember to save frequently (because this step deactivates the autosave for backup feature)

- To get a good Punch performance, close other programs, including the e-mail. Perhaps, other programs are using resources otherwise required in Punch.
Also I'd suggest that you try Pat's Training e-book for more resources

So which video card do i need? i have 845gl motherboard . before installing this video card (rage XL 8mb pci) my pc plays videos and most 3d game very (even gta sanandreas) efficiently but now it is not...

Hi,

The ATI Rage XL 8MB PCI video card is a very old and low power video card.

PCI graphics cards are not as fast as AGP graphics cards so if your motherboard has an AGP slot (it's the slot closest to the CPU and is usually coloured brown) then that would give you better performance.

These days AGP has been superceded by PCI-Express but since your motherboard does not have a PCI-Express slot then the best graphics card for it would be something like this one:

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/5416296/Sapphire-ATI-Radeon-HD-3850-512MB-DDR3-AGP-8X-Graphics-Card/Product.html

Hope this helps, please rate my answer :)

Does 3d card works in optiplex 755 system?

Hi.
Yes, 3d carsd will work in your computer, the only thing you have do is check and make sure that the computer can supply the power requirements for the card.
Some of the video cards run off of the system bus, while others require a seperate power lead attached to them, the same way you plug in power to a hard drive.
Both of the major manufacturers ATI, and NVIDIA, both make 3d cards that will work with your system.
The cards are all pci-e , as this is the fastest bandwidth the system provides for expansion cards.

Something else you will want to look at when upgrading, is what operating system you will be running it on.
Some of the lower prices video cards, even though they might support 3d, they may not support directx 11.
This is crucial if you are running Windows 7, because that is the version that 7 runs on.
Vista runs on dx 10, and xp and below can only run up to directx 9.

Just keep this in mind while shopping.
Both Best Buy, and Fry's carry large selections of 3d capable cards, just remember about the power requirements before you buy.

I hope this answers your question, and gives you some ideas as to which kind of card yo get.

I have a dell c610 laptop, and want to put in a 3d graphics card, what do you recommend and can it be replaced?

because this is a laptop you can only upgrade a couple things, and video is not one of them. You can upgrade memory or install a bigger hard drive but that is all the options you get.
Sorry

Can i increase my dedicated memory of my notebook to 128mb or

Dedicated video memory is memory contained on a graphics cards which is separate from the RAM plugged into the motherboard. The memory on dedicated graphics cards is set aside specifically for the use of processing 3D graphics and effects. Increasing dedicated video memory requires upgrading a video card with one that has more memory built in.

Sorry, but no. There isn't any type of external video card for these, and the internal card is integrated into the motherboard.
