Yes those things like that will affect the ear piece or maybe you accedentally press the volume of your cell phone because of the holster first to remove the holster before you do something to your phone

while on a call, press the talk button you will now hear a dial tone or just silence dial the number to the 3rd party at this time. after the 3rd party has answered press the menu button and select 3way/ conference.

That's pretty cool i'm jealous ha ha but if you really want to hear that stuff, your going to have to get a new ear piece. This one sounds like it's made to filter through that stuff. Otherwise your ear piece just might need to be replaced. If it's still under warranty I would suggest getting a replacement one sent out to you. Hope I helped!
The internal screen settings only adjust volume of ringer, the external button on side adjusts ear piece/hand set volume. If the volume buttons do not turn up the volume of the hand set then the handset is defective
