Question about Stairmaster 4400CL Stepper

1 Answer

My Stair Climber 4400cl is making a clunking sound on both steps. After removing the covers I found the sound coming from the drive belt with teeth. Should I replace the gears as well as the belt?

thanks for the reply maxtreadmill. But my Stair Climber is neither a treadmill nor an elliptical machine. I found no parts for my equipment at the site you suggested. Instead, I found a large selection of parts for Stairmaster Stair Climbers at SportSmith.net.

After removing the cogged belt, I found a couple of broken teeth. I cut them down a little and re-installed the belt so it spun in the opposite direction as a temporary fix while I wait for my new belts to arrive in the mail. The machine now works smoothly with the interim fix.

I appreciate your feed back even thought stepper repairs have dwindle down to a trickle in comparison to other cardio equipment, but National Gym Supply does have an array of Stair Master parts (individually or in kits) comparable to Sport Smith depending on parts availability, I have used both as a secondary sources. Also on geographical note NGS is closer to me and I get my parts the next day without extra charge. Good luck to you in your repairs

I would suggest checking the the drive clutches on the transmission assembly. If they are not free spinning as they should, the pedal will not be able to return all the way up.

Stairmaster left pedal clanks

The "clunking" you are describing is more than likely caused by either a faulty left drive sprocket, the drive shaft or a combination of both. The drive sprockets are equipped with a needle bearing type clutch. When they fail, the clutch does not grab the shaft and drive it correctly. You may just need to replace the left drive sprocket. In some cases you will need to replace the sprocket and the drive shaft.

Why does one pedal drop on my Stairmaster Stepper but the other pedal operates correctly? Stairmaster Steppers, How to Troubleshoot when one Pedal Drops (Loses Resistance) while the Other Pedal Operates Correctly
  • If one pedal drops while the other operates correctly on your Stairmaster stepper, this problem commonly occurs when the drive sprocket on one side or the other becomes defective
  • Usually, when one drive sprocket fails, the other isn't too far behind
  • The best approach to resolve this problem is to install a new hub assembly
This can cause a clunking sound. For the replacement parts, please see the link below.

There are several types of grease that can be used for this machine. You can use a lithium grease on the hub and a 30 WT motor oil on the chains.

You can take the covers off and see if it is indeed the chain that is slipping, but in most cases, the drive sprocket is actually what is failing. The following link will take you the item that should rectify your issue.

Ihave the stairmaster4400CL and it does not have any resitance. How can I repair this

investigate the status of your battery. without proper power, you cannot get resistance. The machine has a 6 volt battery. the battery should provide a minimum of 6 volts when in an idle state. meaning without any activity on the machine, a cold battery test should provide a minimum of 6 volts.

My Tectrix Stairmaster Personal Climber is clicking very loudly every time I work out. Is it the chain or something else? What do you recommend? Thank you.

I would take the cover off and inspect the drive chain to see how much play you have and also check the sprocket to see excessive wear. You can call Cybex International @ 1-800-677-6544 to order parts you will need the serial number that is located in front of the pedals their is a sticker with the serial number on it!
