Sounds like I have a fuel starvation problem with my mountfield mascot mower. How do I clean the carb?

Hmm looks like a brigs .. take air cleaner of and start taking pictures or write how the linkage is routed . use part master carb and choke cleaner part # 1736 get 2 cans. my fav .a small wire brush. and a torch tip cleaner NAPA AUTO PARTS will have one of these.. next spray the carb off while still bolted to motor next loosen bolts that hold cab 2 motor (counter clockwise ) say about 2 full turns, spray again let soak 2 min spray again let sit 1 min. now with the handle of a screw driver hit the carb with the handle in a few different spots, this shock will loosen the grip of the paper gaskets if it has them and this way you don't need 2 buy a carb kit .. kool huh.. take off any rubber o-rings, gaskets set them in the sun to dry use the torch tip cleaner ti clean out any holes in jets you can find (look close ) a air compressor is nice but not needed use the spray and were safty glasses yes it sucks 2 get carb cleaner in you eyes BAD ! when taking needle screws out COUNT THE TURNS norm is 1 1/2 .. let carb dry for 10 min. and reassemble.. 1 more thing clean out the gas tank dump the gas , use a coat hanger and a rag as a mop to sweep the inside of the gas tank clean and dry of any water .fuel filter needs to be cleaned or replaced . check oil if it smells like gas replace it.. file her tank up with (marine gas best ) and it should start on the first PULL ... now here is how you fix your 2 STROKE MOTORCHECK THE SCREEN ON OUTPUT OF THE MUFFLER. ITS CALLED A SPARK ARRESTOR, THESE GET OIL FOULED AND MAKE EM A BEAR TO RUN . CLEAN IT UP AND SHE WILL RUN LIKE A CHAMP, THE CARB MIGHT NEED REBUILDING ,FUEL FILTER AND A SPARK PLUG IS THE FIRST THING TO REPLACE . . IF'N I WAS ANY HELP VOTE FOR ME ...THANKS.. JAY == MOTORWIZJ

Check for dirt in fuel supply to carb. Some particles of dirt can seriously effect running of engine. Sounds like fuel starvation to me!

Tom Make sure that the gaskets on the carb are back good and tight. They may be worn due to taking it apart. The engine sucks the fuel through with the vac seal caused by the piston drawing. If the carb 'o'ring is not seated right it wont create a proper seal.

How do I fix my push mower with a Briggs & Stratton engine?


Its obviously a fuel starvation issue, so there is still some blockage in the carb, re move the carb and see if your frendly local dealer will clean it in there sonic cleaning tank, if not soak with carb cleaner and blow the jets through.

Will not start, fuel starvation fuel not getting into venturee, carb and fuel lines have been cleaned. will only start for a few seconds if primed with fuel directly into carb intake.


Try opening the silver container on the carbeuretor. pull out the fuel valve and spring and clean them and put them back in. then hook up the fuel line again and put the cover back on. Also try puting a bigger tube from the tank to the carb.

How do I change a worn Carburettor Gasket and Diaphram on a SP470 B&S Engine on my Mountfield Lawnmower? I'm good at DIY. The engine is hunting and running erratically.


Hunting and erratic operation are signs of air leaks or diminished fuel flow at WOT settings.

If this mower is running a vacu jet style carb with a diaphragm you simply take off the air cleaner, the vent tube, and then the four screws holding the carb on the gas tank and after the carb body can be lifted remove the throttle linkage so you can flip over the carb and pull the main jet and clean the inlet screens.

MOUNTFIELD PETROL MOWER WONT RUN


If there is a float bowl on this model, takeoff the center screw and look for a little pilot hole on the side and take a small pin or the like and clean this pilot hole and try again to start. Good Luck Pal.

Sounds like you ran the battery down, charge or jump it with an automobile. But now, you need to find why it did not start.

Fuel starvation - 'lean fuel' condition
Basic things to check:
1) spark plug
2) fuel lines and tank filter
3) check choke linkages to make sure choke is fully applied
4) check fuel solenoid (on the bottom or side of the carb) to make sure it is being activated. This will make a small click when key is turned on. It has a small plunger that uncovers the main jet, so it could be plugged.

*if all of the above are OK and/or do not improve performance then:
Remove Carburetor
5) replace gaskets/diaphragms
a) use a spray carb cleaner to clean jets, holes, and body of carb
b) check and clean main jet ( normally is the bottom bolt holding the bowl onto the carb
