Base from the description of your problem there's a chance here that something or some failure on the external drive that you have, What you can do here first is to disconnect and connectthe drive to a different port on your computer then while its connected restart the computer and check if the drive will be detected. But if still not detected it will be better if you can try to connect this drive to a different computer to double check if this is already a hard drive failure.
Because connecting the drive on different computer and still not detected the next step that you need to do is to take this hard drive to a data recovery center on your place to recover those data inside it.

LaCie 500GB external will not show up on mac desktop. Blue light on, whirrs as if working but no icon on desktop (not mounted)

Did you format the drive using Disk Utility? Open "disk utility" from the dock icon or applications/utilities folder. Click the drive name on the left side of the disk utility window. click the "partition" tab in the window, next click the "options" tab and select GUID Partition scheme, or any Mac compatible scheme, read each explanation of the schemes. Name and resize your partitions, click apply. This is how it works running Leopard, not positive if the same applies to Tiger. I hope this helps you
