Base from the description of your problem there's a chance here that something or some failure on the external drive that you have, What you can do here first is to disconnect and connectthe drive to a different port on your computer then while its connected restart the computer and check if the drive will be detected. But if still not detected it will be better if you can try to connect this drive to a different computer to double check if this is already a hard drive failure.
Because connecting the drive on different computer and still not detected the next step that you need to do is to take this hard drive to a data recovery center on your place to recover those data inside it.
