Is it a costly repair to replace camshaft that opens and closes valves. Or should I replace with new motor

Hello. I recommend that you price it both ways, keeping in mind that the new engine would have a warranty and the repaired one will not. Is it costly, yes. J.

Loss of pressure

You will probably find the loss of pressure is bad pump seals maybe even worn pump pistons. The problem is that it cost as much to repair these pump as it does to replace them with a new warrantied unit most times. Larger commerical pumps are still fairly reasonable to repair but the replacement costs are coming down too.

chains are not repairable only replace with new ! remove camshaft etc then cylinder head , then barrel and with the side cover etc removed then replace the chain ! tdc the piston when barrel back on feeding the chain up , fit head then fit cam with all valves closed and should line up to a mark on cam cog , fit chain then bolt the cam down , rotate the engine several times back to tdc and check valve clearences and refit all parts and change the oil !

How to fix my car with no compression

This is a problem which at its cheapest will require a new timing chain. This would be the solution if you remove a valve cover, have someone turn the starter and observe if the valves and camshaft is moving.
If the valve train and camshaft does not move, when the crankshaft is turning, then the crankshaft and camshaft are not linked. The timing chain is that link.
The single cam engines are easier to repair. Once you determine that a timing chain is needed some alignment of the timing marks are needed. On some styles of motors, the front of the motor can be removed without even removing a valve cover.
However, if the valves are turning when the engine is cranked, the engine could have jumped time, leaving the camshaft and crankshaft connected.
Next, fuel flooding. Sometimes the fuel injectors leak and wash away the oil coating on the compression rings on the pistons. This will pretty much zero the compression on the cylinders. Check your oil, drain the oil pan, see if there is a gain in the number of quarts of oil that comes out. Any gain would be straight gasoline.
Remove the sparkplugs, see if engine has compression. Throw a couple of quarts of oil in crankcase and squirt oil into cylinders through sparkplug holes. If compression builds, rings had problems, if compression does not build valves are problem.
You can talk about the repair, replacing a timing chain, and get the best price.

Be careful, the motor in your car is an interference motor, which means that if you break the timing belt and then try to start it back up, the motor will crush its own valves and damage pistons and who knows what else. timing belt replacement is really cheap compared to rebuilding/replacing a motor. hope this helps. also if you let it idle and open the hood, stick your head by the the timing cover and see if you hear kinda a slapping, ticking type noises. if you do, immediately go to a mechanic and spend the $400-500 to fix it if it isn't cheaper, can't remember what I payed last year. A new/used/rebuilt motor will start around $1800 if your lucky. good luck.

Honda's troubleshooting flowchart shows the following for Code P0341:

  • incorrect timing
  • damaged or stretched chain
  • clogged or stuck open/closed VTC (Variable Timing Control) oil control solenoid valve
  • faulty VTC actuator
  • damaged camshaft position (cmp) pulse plate

Basically, if your camshaft were to break, 2 things. One is, the motor will no longer run at all. The camshaft is on the top of the engine inside the valve cover, and it is responsible for opening and closing the valves.
Second, take some pictures, because camshafts breaking is really as rare as hen's teeth!
Wish I could tell you what the problem is, but my only suggestion is: don't drive the car, or even start it for that matter. Have it towed to a repair shop. This sounds serious.

No, you will have open valves when the timing marks are aligned. This will create spring pressure and will want to move the cams to a neutral position. This is why you need the retaining tool to hold the cams in the proper location while the belt is replaced.

I have a 2003 isuzu rodeo, and the timing belt broke. its a 2.2l motor. I have no compresion and i think its the head. is there anything else besides the head that i need to be aware of when fixing my...

Don't condemn the head just yet.

When the timing belt breaks, the camshaft stops turning, so the relative position of valves doesn't' change if you try cranking the motor over. Any valves (intake or exhaust) that aren't fully seated will allow pressure to "blow by" that other wise would form the compression you say you no longer have.

What I'm not sure of is if you have an "interference" motor. An referenced motor is one in which the piston can strike a valve head when the timing belt breaks. The clearances are so close that all moving parts have to be in perfect sync in order to operate and not strike one another.

It is possible, with an interference engine, to break valves and / or crack a piston if attempting to crank and the piston comes in contact with an open valve.

If it isn't an interference engine, you shouldn't have any problems. Just get the cam and crank (and any other shaft(s) that may be belt driven) in proper timing, install a new belt, apply the correct tension and you're basically "good to go"

I'd suggest you purchase a vehicle specific repair manual at your auto parts store. It'll contain step by step instructions specific to your vehicle on how to perform this repair.

My lawn mower will not start, it has spark but 0 compression.

A bent or broken pushrod is just a symptom of a larger problem that is causing a valve to hit the piston (or vice versa). Since you say the valves open and close, it's probably not a bent valve shaft, and like you suggest, it's the valve timing which is controlled by the camshaft gear. No matter what, it's not a repair to tackle at home. If the mower's in warranty, take it back for a proper repair -- and consider trying a different shop than last time. If it's out of warranty, you might find a small engine mechanic that can fix it for less than the price of a new motor. Get a good estimate before you say yes.
