Help! I purchased a microtek desktop color scanner (scanmaker 5950 pro) for my gateway computery (running windows vista). Pursuant to the start-up instructions, I placed the microtek cd in my dvd/cd rom drive. The drive whirred and whirred and never did any thing. I could not get Windows Explorer to eject the disk or do anything. Finally I shut down the computer by hand. I went through this process several times until my computer would not restart. Finally I was able to manually eject the cd rom. How do I get the start up software to work? Is it available online? Thanks!!

Hi a_taxpayer

In the future, you don't need to shut down your computer when there's a CD caught in the drive.

Grab yourself a thin paper clip and straighten out about a half inch or so of it.

Look on the front bezel (face) of your optical drive (CD-ROM, DVD drive, etc.) If you look closely you'll see a tiny hole about the diameter of your paper clip. It can be hard to see so you might need to shine a flash light on the front of the drive.

Carefully insert the paper clip into the hole and slowly but firmly push in w/ it until you're able to eject the disc. Make sure you insert the paper clip straight in as it's easy to miss the eject mechanism if you insert it at an angle.


Now w/ respect to why the CD is getting hung up, the symptoms you describe are mechanical in nature. Most likely, the problem is w/ the CD itself.

(01) Are you able to read other CD's in this same optical (DVD or CD) drive?

(02) If you are not able to play or run other CD's in this drive then you may well have an issue w/ your drive. Please, let us know if that is the case and we'll help you look further into that.

(03) If, however, you are able to play/run other CD's and DVDs in this optical drive, flip over the CD you are trying to run and look closely at the surface of the shiny side.

(04) Look for any discoloration - especially discoloration that runs in a line from the center to the edge. (This is what a hairline crack in the disc would look like.)

If your media is cracked, it will need to be replaced in order to get any bundled software that came w/ your scanner.

Your scanner drivers and manual, however, can simply be downloaded from the manufacturer's web site. (I'll give you links to them in a moment.)

Look also for any deep scratches, smudges, or foreign material on the shiny-side surface of the CD.

If it doesn't look nice and shiny, place it under a barely warm (**NOT** hot) tap and gently wash the surface w/ **mild** dish soap (**after** rinsing it off w/ water 1st to remove any abrasive material that might be there). Thoroughly rinse off the soap.

If you have a cloth that you use for cleaning eye glasses, dry the CD off initially w/ a soft lint free cloth then shine it up w/ the eye glasses cloth.

Now pop it back in the optical drive and see what happens.

If it still won't play, you'll need to get a replacement disc from the manufacturer.

I just checked Microtek's web site. It looks as though you can download everything you'll need for the scanner. It doesn't appear you need the CD at all (unless there's some bundled software on it that I'm unaware of).

Please, go HERE for downloads for your Microtek Scanmaker 5950 Pro running on Windows Vista.
W/ these downloads, you should be able to proceed w/ installing your scanner just fine.

I have a dell 946 all in one printer... everything works but the scanner... I just purchased a new computer that has vista and my old computer had xp... worked fine on old puter... any suggestions

You need a new driver from Dell that funtions with Vista. If you have Vista X64 OS then this function may not be available for a while longer as the driver for the scanner is still in development. There is a significant difference between a 32-bit and 64-bit OS.

I'm running into networking problems with my Vista X64 OS and a printer on my home network that connects through XP Pro on a desktop computer with a 32-bit OS.

A Windoze Vista 32-bit laptop has no problems with this printer.

Is this compatible with windows vista os. I bought a new hp with vista installed and my old scanners and hp photoshop 1000 wont run on it. Just wondering if I bought the used color printer if it would be...

I looked it up and it is indeed compatible but before you buy a new one try this link:

You should be able to use the printer with vista once you download the utility the program recommends.

I am trying to scan a photo. I put the photo face down on the scanner of my HP Photosmart C3150 All-in-One then push the button for start scan/reprints and nothing happens. Can you help me?

I had purchased a new computer that ran on Windows Vista. I was able to go onto the HP support and found out that the scan button would not work because the printer was purchased before Windows Vista operating system came out even though the printer and copier part worked fine. HP support offered two solutions and the one that worked for me was to:

Choose Programs
From Scanner or Camera

HP PSC 2350 Printer/Scanner & just purchased a new computer (Windows Vista) & the discs I have for this printer/scanner only support Windows 2000, XP not Vista.

You can set compatability to windows 2000. I presume you have vista. start menu. control panel, programs... then you will see set compatability or similiar (my control panel won't open at the moment). use the wizard to walk you thru the steps. select the program you are having issues with. It will allow you to run the program as win 2000 compatability.

Congratulations, you just installed one of the best and more stable windows systems in your PC.
About your scanner, download the driver from here: ScanMaker and run the executable file. Its a Windows Millenium driver, not 2000 so it may have some problem with the Operating system because it wasn't designed to run in windows 2000.
Install the driver and tell us if your scanner worked ok!.

Scanner cannot communicate with computer

Please check weather windows services "Windows Image Acquisiton(WIA)" is started,

You can check out by opening the windows services from control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

or by typing the command "services.msc" in run or at command prompt

check weather "Windows Image Acquision(WIA)" is started and set to startup type "automatice"

Then Install your Scanner Drivers and Softwares

Then Have Fun
