I have a craftsmen mower that is about ten years old it has a briggs 17.5 hp motor. was mowing yesterday in some tall grass and it made a noise like I had hit something and it died. pushed the mower out of the grass and checked undr the deck nothing blocking the blades.tried to restart and motor acted like it was locked up. turned mag counter clockwise and then it appeared to free it up. tried to start it and motors cranks but faster than before almost like no compression and it will not fire

You did in fact hit something if the engine cranks faster than it did before

The cam that drives the valves to open and close is broken is your case since no compression is available

Replace stripped gear

This sounds to me like a simple governor issue, and to be more precise a tensions spring. Along with the the linkage rod from the governor arm to the carburetor should be a small spring as well, check it and make sure it hasn't come loose or even fallen completely off. This spring works to make the govorner transitions slower and smooth and eliminates bouncing back and forth of the gov. I hope this helps.

Yardman 38" 7160 the deck belt is loose

Have you been mowing high grass, and how long has the belt been on? if you have mowed tall grass or belt is older than 2 years old it needs replaced, most don't realize how much a belt stretches from mowing tall grass. I hope this has been helpful.

My briggs and stratton twin cylinder engine runs good until I try to mow with it. The engine dies down and will cut off unless I disengage the mower.

If you are cutting to much grass this can happen or if the throttle control is not in fast speed (rabbit). If it is in slow speed (turtle) it will tend to die down in tall grass or wet grass. Good Luck...

I tried to mow the grass even though it rained this am. our grass was really high and i saw a little smoke come out of the lawnmower. is that because the grass was still a little wet or the grass was...

Nope. If the grass is too high, knock it down to size with a weedeater first. These electric mowers cannot handle the tall, high stuff. If you do, you will surely burn it up.

I bought a Weedeater with a Briggs and Stratton engine less than 4 months ago. While mowing thick grass (all my grass is thick this year) it boggs down and gaggs out. Fuel starts spitting out the vent...

You need to check two things. First, what size (horsepower) engine does it have? and second, how sharp is the blade? If you mowing that hard continuously, you'll need a very sharp mower with a good amount of horsepower or you'll just kill the poor thing. I would recommend you have at least 6 HP if that grass is giving you that much trouble. Be sure your blade is sharp (sounds like it's not) or it will just bash the grass down instead of cutting it off. Have your blade professionally sharpened, or better yet, buy a new one. They only run around $15 USD for a standard 22 inch blade. I hope this helps. Best of luck to you.

Craftsmen LT 3000 will not crank

That Briggs engine is not a good engine it has a weak governor gear that is known to come apart for no reason what so ever it may have done so and some of the parts stopped the cam gear from turning. Good luck!
